あらすじ
不良少年・浦飯幽助は、ある日、車に轢かれそうになった子供をかばって命を落とす。だが幽助自身も予想していなかった自己犠牲の死に、霊界（あの世の運営組織）は対応が追いつかず、幽助の魂は生き返る機会を与えられる。閻魔大王の息子で霊界の役人・コエンマの依頼をこなすことで幽助は生き返り、以後、亡霊やあやかしが絡む事件を解決する霊界探偵として働くことになる。霊界の秘宝を盗んだ妖怪を追う事件を皮切りに、かつての宿敵・桑原和真、妖狐の生まれ変わりである蔵馬、炎を操る妖怪・飛影ら、立場も出自も異なる仲間たちが幽助の周囲に集まっていく。事件は次第に、人間界への侵入を企てる妖怪たちとの大規模な抗争へと発展していく。妖怪の実力者だけが出場を許される裏の大会・暗黒武術会への参加、そして人間界と魔界を隔てる結界をめぐる事件を経て、幽助は自分自身の力の正体と、自分がどちらの世界の側の存在なのかという問いに向き合っていくことになる。
Synopsis
Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent, dies pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car. His death is such an unplanned act of self-sacrifice that Spirit World, the bureaucracy running the afterlife, is not prepared for it, and gives his soul a chance to come back. Completing tasks for Koenma, son of the ruler of the underworld and a Spirit World official, earns Yusuke his life back, and from there he works as a Spirit Detective, handling cases involving ghosts and demons. Starting with a case chasing down the demons who stole three treasures from Spirit World, an unlikely group gathers around him: former rival Kazuma Kuwabara, Kurama (the reincarnation of a fox demon), and Hiei, a fire-wielding demon. The cases escalate from small-time hauntings into a much larger conflict with demons who want the Human World for themselves. Through the Dark Tournament -- an underground event open only to demons of real strength -- and then a plot against the barrier dividing the Human World from the Demon World, Yusuke is forced to confront what his own power actually is, and which side of that barrier he belongs on.

妖怪の実力者だけが出場を許される裏格闘技大会・暗黒武術会に、幽助は桑原・蔵馬・飛影とチームを組んで参加する。大会は、主催者の一人である人間・左京が、人間界と魔界をつなぐ穴を開けるという計画を抱えたまま進行し、幽助たちは左京が擁する戸愚呂兄弟のチームと対決することになる。幽助の師である幻海が、かつて共に戦った間柄である戸愚呂弟の手にかかって命を落とす場面で緊張が最高潮に達する。幽助は幻海から受け継いだ霊光波動拳を含む霊力のすべてを出し切り、戸愚呂弟を打ち倒す。この編で幽助・蔵馬・飛影はそれぞれ固有の必殺技と戦闘スタイルを確立し、寄せ集めのチームから一つの集団としてまとまっていく。作品が事件解決ものから、勝ち抜き戦の物語へ完全に軸足を移す区間でもある。

大会後、幽助の前任にあたる霊界探偵・仙水忍が、人間界と魔界を隔てる結界を壊し、妖怪を人間界へ呼び込もうと画策していることが判明する。仙水は幽助と同じ霊界側の人間でありながら、人間が妖怪に対して行う仕打ちを目撃して人間そのものに絶望した人物であり、幽助にとって初めて敵か味方かで単純に割り切れない相手として描かれる。暗黒武術会で一度命を落としたのち生き返っていた幻海は、この編でもなお幽助を導き続ける。仙水に一度殺された幽助は、遠い祖先である魔族・雷禅の血によって魔族として蘇り、自分が人間だけの存在ではなかったことを知る。物語の焦点は、ここで人間と妖怪の境界そのものへ移っていく。

17〜19巻／魔界統一トーナメント編
幽助の遠い祖先で、魔界の三大勢力の一角を占めていた雷禅が世を去る。雷禅は愛した人間の女性のために人間を食うことをやめ、長い断食の末に力を失って果てた妖怪だった。空位となった雷禅の座と魔界の頂点を巡って、幽助は雷禅の旧友たちに担がれる形で魔界統一トーナメントの開催を提案し、力ではなく大会で頂点を決めるという道が選ばれる。黄泉と軀という他の二大勢力の主も、これに応じて大会へ加わる。蔵馬・飛影もそれぞれの目的で参戦し、桑原は人間でありながら魔界へ渡って関わっていく。人間界と魔界、どちらで生きるのかを仲間たちが選び取っていくなかで、物語は幽助自身の選択へと収束していく。

Vols. 1-5 / Yusuke's resurrection through the Four Saint Beasts arc
Delinquent teenager Yusuke Urameshi dies saving a child from being hit by a car. Because it is such an unplanned act of self-sacrifice, Spirit World does not know what to do with his soul, and Koenma, son of the underworld's ruler, offers him a chance to come back to life by completing tasks. Restored to his body, Yusuke starts working as a Spirit Detective alongside Botan, Spirit World's ferrygirl, while keeping up his old rivalry with Kazuma Kuwabara and his friendship with Keiko Yukimura. His first real case is the hunt for Goki, Kurama and Hiei, three demons who have stolen three artifacts from Spirit World; Kurama and Hiei, later his closest allies, are enemies here, and their reasons get laid out alongside the fight. In the Four Saint Beasts arc that follows, Yusuke stops a bid to seize the Human World with Kurama and Hiei now fighting beside him. At this stage his spiritual power is still weak and his fighting is mostly raw physical force.

The Dark Tournament
Vols. 6-13 / the Dark Tournament arc
Yusuke enters the Dark Tournament, an underground fighting tournament open only to demons of real strength, teaming up with Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei. Behind the event is Sakyo, one of its human backers, who intends to use his winnings to open a hole between the Human World and the Demon World, and whose team is led by the Toguro brothers. Tension peaks when Yusuke's mentor Genkai is killed by the younger Toguro, a man she once fought alongside decades earlier. Her death is what finally pushes Yusuke to spend every last bit of his spirit energy, including the Spirit Wave technique he inherited from her, and he uses it to defeat Toguro. Over this arc, Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei each develop signature techniques and fighting styles, turning from a thrown-together team into a real unit, and the series shifts fully from case-of-the-week detective work to tournament fighting.

A mirror named Sensui
Vols. 14-16 / the Chapter Black arc
After the tournament, it comes out that Shinobu Sensui, the Spirit Detective who held the job before Yusuke, is trying to tear open the barrier between the Human World and the Demon World in order to let demons into it. Sensui comes from the same side as Yusuke, but after seeing what humans do to demons he gave up on humanity itself, which makes him the first enemy Yusuke cannot simply sort into friend or foe. Genkai, brought back to life after her death in the Dark Tournament, keeps guiding Yusuke through this arc as well. Sensui kills Yusuke, and Yusuke returns as a demon, awakened by the blood of Raizen, a distant ancestor -- learning that he was never purely human. From here the story's focus shifts to the line between human and demon itself.

The Demon World Tournament, and everyone's own road
Vols. 17-19 / the Three Kings arc
Raizen, Yusuke's distant ancestor and one of the three rulers of the Demon World, dies. He had stopped eating humans for the sake of a human woman he loved, and starved himself down to nothing over the centuries that followed. With his territory and the top of the Demon World now open, Yusuke proposes settling it with a tournament rather than a war, and the other two rulers, Yomi and Mukuro, agree to take part. Kurama and Hiei enter for their own reasons, and Kuwabara, still fully human, crosses into the Demon World to be part of it. As his friends each choose which world they belong in, the story narrows down to Yusuke's own choice.

魔界統一トーナメントは、幽助の遠い祖先である魔族・雷禅の死をきっかけに開かれる。雷禅は愛した人間の女性のために人間を食うことをやめ、長い断食の末に力尽きて世を去っていた。空位となった魔界の頂点を巡り、幽助は力ずくの奪い合いではなく大会で決めるという道を選び、雷禅の旧友たちや、黄泉・軀といった魔界の実力者も参加する大規模なトーナメントが実現する。幽助は自分の中に流れる魔族の血と向き合いながら出場するが、優勝には届かず、黄泉との一戦に敗れて姿を消す。大会を制したのは、雷禅の旧友である煙鬼だった。煙鬼を新たな魔界の王として、妖怪が人間界で人を襲うことを禁じる取り決めが敷かれ、幽助が危惧していたような妖怪の人間界侵略という事態は避けられる。 大会を終えた幽助・桑原・蔵馬・飛影は、それぞれ別の道を歩み始める。蔵馬は人間・南野秀一として学生生活に戻り、飛影は魔界に残って自分の生き方を追求する。桑原は進学のために勉強を続け、幽助は大会後しばらく魔界にとどまったのち人間界で生きることを選び、高校には進学せずラーメンの屋台を切り盛りしながら、魔界と人間界を行き来する仕事も引き受けるようになる。幽助の師・幻海はすでに世を去っており、その所有地は人間と妖怪が共生するための場所として遺言で遺されている。 最終話では、魔界から人間界に戻って三年ぶりとなる幽助のもとを、幼なじみの雪村螢子が訪れる。幽助が自分で作ったラーメンを螢子に振る舞う場面で物語は幕を閉じる。幽助が最終的に霊界探偵の肩書を離れ、人間界で生きる道を自分で選んだところで、少年時代から続いた物語は締めくくられる。

The Demon World Tournament is set off by the death of Raizen, Yusuke's distant ancestor, a demon who stopped eating humans for the sake of a human woman he loved and slowly starved himself to death. With the top of the Demon World vacant, Yusuke pushes for the succession to be settled by a tournament instead of a war, and Raizen's old friends enter alongside the other great rulers, Yomi and Mukuro. Yusuke competes while reckoning with the demon blood in his own veins, but he never reaches the top: he loses his match against Yomi and drops out. The tournament is won by Enki, an old friend of Raizen's. As the new ruler, Enki puts in place a rule forbidding demons from preying on people in the Human World, and the invasion Yusuke had feared never comes. Once the tournament ends, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei each go their own way. Kurama returns to being a human student under the name Shuichi Minamino, Hiei stays in the Demon World to pursue his own path, and Kuwabara keeps studying with school ahead of him. Yusuke stays on in the Demon World for a while after the tournament and then chooses the Human World; he skips high school and runs a ramen stand, while also taking on work that has him moving between the two worlds. Genkai, Yusuke's mentor, has died by this point, and her will leaves her land as a place where humans and demons can live alongside each other. In the final chapter, Yusuke comes back to the Human World after three years away in the Demon World, and his childhood friend Keiko Yukimura comes to see him; the story closes on him serving her a bowl of the ramen he now makes himself. With Yusuke stepping away from the Spirit Detective title and choosing, on his own, to live in the Human World, the story that began with his death comes to an end.

敵にも事情を与える設計
霊界の秘宝を盗んだ蔵馬と飛影、四聖獣、戸愚呂兄弟、仙水忍など、本作の敵キャラクターの多くには、単なる悪ではない固有の事情や過去が用意されている。蔵馬と飛影にいたっては、敵として登場したのちそのまま主人公側の主要人物になる。特に仙水忍は、幽助と同じ霊界側の人間でありながら、人間が妖怪に対して行う仕打ちを目撃して人間そのものに絶望し敵に回るという構造を持ち、勧善懲悪では割り切れない相手として描かれる。敵を倒すべき壁としてだけでなく、事情を抱えた一個人として描くこの手法は、格闘トーナメント形式の暗黒武術会編を単なる勝ち抜き戦以上のものにしており、作者・冨樫義博の後続作『HUNTER×HUNTER』にも引き継がれる作家性の原点として位置づけられることが多い。
主題が編ごとに変わる連載
本作は幽霊退治から妖怪との抗争、暗黒武術会でのトーナメント、仙水編での人間対妖怪という対立軸の反転、そして魔界統一トーナメントへと、編を追うごとに舞台と主題を大きく転換させながら連載を続けた。当初は霊界探偵ものとして始まった物語が、最終的には主人公自身が人間だけの存在ではなく魔族の血を引くと判明し、人間界と魔界の境界そのものを扱う話に着地する構成は、連載を重ねるにつれて作者の関心の対象そのものが変化していった結果と評されることが多い。舞台も、人間界の市街から霊界、暗黒武術会が開かれる島、そして魔界へと編ごとに移っている。主人公の目的も、生き返ることから依頼の遂行へ、仲間とともに勝ち抜くことへ、そして自分がどちらの世界で生きるかへと入れ替わっていく。

最終章にあたる魔界統一トーナメント編は、優勝者が主人公チームの誰でもない煙鬼だったという展開や、最終章そのものが全19巻のうち終盤のわずかな巻数にまとめられている点について、掲載当時から賛否が分かれている。幽助・桑原・蔵馬・飛影のいずれも優勝しておらず、主人公チームから王が出ないまま大会は終わる。大会そのものも一度きりではなく、以後も定期的に開かれることが作中で示される。従来の少年漫画の定石である主人公が頂点を取るという形を外し、幽助自身は人間界に戻ることを選ぶという着地は、勝敗そのものより主人公がどちらの世界で生きるかという選択を主題化したものとして肯定的に語られる一方、駆け足な展開として批判的に受け止める読者も多い。
実写化が呼び戻した読者
2023年12月、Netflixで実写ドラマ版『幽☆遊☆白書』が配信され、日本発のシリーズ作品としては歴代最高のグローバルヒットになったと報じられた。配信にあわせて原作の一部エピソードが電子書籍サービスで期間限定無料公開されるなど、連載終了から約30年を経て新しい読者層に作品が届く機会となった。実写化を機に語られる原作の評価は暗黒武術会編までのトーナメント構成に対するものが中心で、魔界統一トーナメント編を含めた完結までの評価とは、注目される部分がやや異なっている。実写版は全5話で、全19巻ある原作のうち一部の範囲を扱うにとどまる。本稿の記述は原作単行本を基準としており、実写版独自の改変は扱っていない。

Giving the villains a reason
Many of this story's antagonists -- Kurama and Hiei as the thieves of Spirit World's artifacts, the Four Saint Beasts, the Toguro brothers, Shinobu Sensui -- come with their own specific circumstances and history rather than being simple evil. Kurama and Hiei go from enemies in their first appearance to core members of the hero's own group. Sensui in particular is written as someone from the same side as Yusuke who turns against humanity after seeing what people do to demons, making him an enemy who cannot be filed away as a pure villain. Treating an enemy not just as an obstacle to clear but as a person with a reason of their own is what elevates the Dark Tournament arc's tournament format above a simple string of fights, and it is often cited as the origin point of a sensibility Yoshihiro Togashi carries forward into his later series, Hunter x Hunter.
A story that changes its premise arc by arc
The series moves from ghost-hunting to a battle against demons, to a fighting tournament in the Dark Tournament arc, to a reversal of the human-versus-demon axis in the Chapter Black arc, and finally to the Demon World Tournament, shifting both setting and central concern with almost every arc. A story that started out as a Spirit Detective procedural ends up revealing that its own hero was never purely human, and lands on a story about the boundary between the Human and Demon Worlds itself -- a shift often read as tracking the author's own changing interests over the course of the run. The settings move with it -- ordinary streets, Spirit World, the island the Dark Tournament is held on, and finally the Demon World -- and so does what Yusuke is after: coming back to life, then finishing an assignment, then winning alongside his team, then deciding which world he lives in.
The split verdict on the final arc
The Demon World Tournament arc draws mixed reactions dating back to its original run -- both for how few of the nineteen volumes the final arc is given, and for handing the win to Enki, a character entirely outside the hero's own team. None of the four -- Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei -- wins it, so the arc ends without a king coming out of the hero's own team, and the tournament is set up in the story as something that will keep being held rather than a one-off. Sidestepping the usual shonen convention of the hero claiming the top spot, and having Yusuke choose to go back to the Human World instead, is read by some as putting the emphasis on which world Yusuke belongs in rather than on who wins the fight -- while other readers see the same choice as a rushed way to end the story.
A live-action version brought readers back
In December 2023, a live-action Netflix adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho was released and was reported as the biggest global hit any Japanese-produced Netflix series had had. Around the same release window, part of the manga was made available free for a limited time on a digital manga service, giving the story a chance to reach a new readership roughly thirty years after it originally finished. Most of the discussion the live-action version generated about the source material centers on the tournament structure up through the Dark Tournament arc, which is a somewhat different focus than the discussion around the ending, including the final arc, tends to be. The live-action version runs five episodes and covers only part of the nineteen-volume manga; everything described in this piece is based on the manga rather than on that adaptation.
