グレイス＝フィールドハウスは、森に囲まれた小さな孤児院である。三十八人の子どもが、ママと呼ぶ女性・イザベラのもとで暮らし、毎日たっぷりの食事と、全員が受ける奇妙なテストを与えられている。六歳から十二歳までの間に里親が決まって出ていく決まりで、子どもたちはそれを疑ったことがない。十一歳のエマ、ノーマン、レイは、テストで満点を取り続ける三人組だった。ある夜、里子に出されたはずのコニーが忘れ物を取りに戻ったのを追いかけたエマとノーマンは、門の外でコニーの死体と、それを引き取りに来た人ならざる者たちを見る。孤児院は農園であり、子どもは鬼と呼ばれる存在の食用として育てられていた。よい食事も、毎日のテストも、質のよい肉を作るための管理だった。ママは飼育監であり、全員の首には位置を知らせる発信器が埋められている。エマは、自分たちだけが逃げるのではなく、ハウスの子ども全員で脱獄すると決める。相手は大人一人と、まだ何も知らない外の世界である。年長の三人は、テストで鍛えた頭脳と、互いへの信頼と、そして互いへの疑いを使って、ママの監視の下で計画を進めていく。

Synopsis

Grace Field House is a small orphanage ringed by forest. Thirty-eight children live there under a woman they call Mom, Isabella, fed generously every day and given a strange test every morning. Children leave between the ages of six and twelve when foster parents are found, and nobody has ever questioned it. Emma, Norman and Ray, all eleven, are the three who score full marks on every test. One night, following Conny, who was supposed to have been adopted out and came back for a forgotten toy, Emma and Norman find her body at the gate and the creatures who have come to collect it. The orphanage is a farm. The children are livestock raised as food for beings called demons. The good food and the daily tests were quality control. Mom is a breeder, and every child has a tracker embedded in the neck. Emma decides that the three of them will not escape alone: every child in the house goes. What they are up against is one adult and an outside world they know nothing about. The three oldest use the minds those tests built, their trust in each other, and their suspicion of each other, to plan an escape under constant supervision.

    外の世界には鬼が住み、人間の側にも農園を維持してきた者たちがいることが分かってくる。ウィリアム・ミネルヴァが残した座標をたどった一行は、人を食べなくても姿を保てる邪血の鬼ムジカとソンジュに助けられ、地下シェルターで年長の脱走者ユウゴと出会う。次の座標が示す先は、金持ちの鬼が人間を狩るために作られた秘密の猟場ゴールディ・ポンドだった（8巻65話から11巻95話）。エマはそこで捕らわれ、以前から生き延びていた子どもたちと組んで、狩る側の貴族に反撃する。この段階で、物語の枠は一つのハウスからの脱出ではなく、人間と鬼の関係そのものへ広がる。同時に、七つの壁という言葉と、千年前の約束の存在が初めて示される。

    出荷されたはずのノーマンが生きて再登場する。実験施設ラムダ7214から仲間を連れて脱出した彼は、鬼を絶滅させる計画を進めていた。鬼は人間を食べ続けなければ知性も姿も保てないという弱点があり、それを利用すれば根絶できる。エマはこれに反対する。人を食べない鬼がいることを知っているからであり、殺し尽くす以外の道を探そうとするからである。ここで対立するのは敵と味方ではなく、同じハウスで育った二人の判断である。エマは七つの壁へ向かい、千年前に約束を交わした人ならざる者と対面して、食用児全員が人間の世界へ渡ることを願い出る。願いは受け入れられるが、対価が課される。エマはその内容を仲間に伏せたまま戻ってくる。

    王都の転覆と、GFハウス奪還

    17〜20巻／第141〜181話

    最後の局面は、鬼の側と人間の側で同時に動く。王都では、人を食べなくても姿を保てる邪血をムジカが広めたことで、女王と五摂家が握っていた支配の根拠が崩れる。人間を食べ続けなければならないという前提が外れれば、農園を維持する理由も消える。一方、グレイス＝フィールドハウスには人間側の当主ピーター・ラートリーが乗り込み、残された幼い子どもたちごと農園を守ろうとする。エマたちは迎えに戻るという最初の約束を果たすため、ハウスへ向かう。この段階で戦われているのは、誰を倒すかではなく、二つの世界をつないでいる千年前の取り決めを、どう別のものに組み替えるかである。

How the story is built

  1. Setup

    The farm, and getting everyone out

    Vols. 1-5 / chapters 1-37

    This stretch takes place entirely inside the house. The children are running, one adult is chasing, and what is on the board is information rather than force: who is an ally, who is informing, and how much you can make the other side believe you know. Emma, Norman and Ray work through the trackers, the wall, the outside contact, one obstacle at a time. Midway the plan collapses twice over, when it comes out that Ray has been feeding Mom information for six years and when Norman's shipment is confirmed. Emma still refuses, to the end, to leave anyone behind in order to get out. On January 15, 2046, Emma and Ray take fifteen children over the wall. The children aged four and under are deliberately left at the house, since taking them along would kill all of them. The promise to come back for them becomes the spine of everything that follows.

  2. Development

    The shelter and the secret hunting ground

    Vols. 6-11 / chapters 38-95

    Outside, it turns out, demons live in a society, and there are humans who have kept the farms running. Following coordinates left by someone using the name William Minerva, the group is helped by Mujika and Sonju, demons whose evil blood lets them hold their form without eating humans, and finds an older escapee, Yugo, in an underground shelter. The next set of coordinates leads to Goldy Pond, a hunting ground built so that wealthy demons can hunt humans for sport (volume 8 chapter 65 through volume 11 chapter 95). Emma is captured there and joins children who have been surviving inside it to turn on the aristocrats doing the hunting. From here the frame of the story stops being escape from one house and becomes the relationship between humans and demons. The phrase Seven Walls, and the existence of a thousand-year-old promise, appear for the first time.

  3. Turn

    The Seven Walls and Norman's plan

    Vols. 11-16 / roughly chapters 96-140

    Norman, supposedly shipped out, returns alive. Having escaped the experimental facility Lambda 7214 with others, he is running a plan to wipe the demons out. Demons cannot hold their intelligence or their shape without continuing to eat humans, and that weakness can be used to finish them. Emma opposes him. She has met demons who do not eat people, and she wants a route that is not extermination. The conflict here is not between enemies but between two children raised in the same house arriving at different judgments. Emma goes to the Seven Walls, meets the being who made the promise a thousand years ago, and asks that every farmed child be allowed to cross into the human world. The request is granted, and a price is set. She comes back without telling anyone what it is.

  4. Resolution

    The capital falls, and Grace Field is retaken

    Vols. 17-20 / chapters 141-181

    The last movement runs on both sides at once. In the demon capital, Mujika spreads the evil blood that lets demons keep their form without eating humans, and the basis of the queen's and the five regent families' power collapses. Once the requirement to keep eating people is gone, the reason to maintain the farms goes with it. On the human side, Peter Ratri, head of the family that has held up the human end of the arrangement, arrives at Grace Field House intending to preserve the farm, small children included. Emma's group goes back for them, keeping the promise they made at the wall. What is actually being fought over at this point is not who wins a battle but how the thousand-year-old arrangement between the two worlds can be replaced with a different one.

The ending

Open the ending (it is given away in full)

The price of the promise was Emma herself. What she asked of the being at the Seven Walls was that every farmed child cross into the human world and that passage between the two worlds be closed; what was demanded in return was the bond she had with her family. She took that on alone and went into the last fight without telling anyone. In the capital, the queen and the five regent families fall. Mujika spreads the evil blood that lets demons hold their form without eating humans, the power of the royal house and the aristocracy loses its footing, and Mujika is installed as the new ruler. A route to a society that does not depend on human farms opens on the demon side. At Grace Field House, Peter Ratri has moved in. The head of the family that carried the human end of the promise clings to the farm system and moves to eliminate the children who remain. Emma's group seizes the control room and turns the situation, and Ratri, cornered, takes his own life. That is where the human faction trying to keep the farms running ends. In January 2047 the farmed children pass through the gate into the human world. Emma is not among them. The price has been collected: she is dropped, alone and without her memories of her family, in a distant place. An old man who lost his own family in a war takes her in, and she lives there with no name and no past. The wish that everyone would reach the human world was granted, and the everyone it covered turned out not to include her. The others spend two years searching. When they finally find her in a busy street, she does not know who they are. She cries anyway and says she has wanted to see them all this time. Norman answers that it is enough that she exists as Emma. The story never shows her memory returning. It ends at the point where a relationship that stayed broken is started over from scratch.

解説

優しさが飼育の合理でもあるという反転

この作品の設定の中心は、子どもが大事に育てられている理由が、出荷のためだったという一点にある。栄養のある食事も、毎日のテストも、抱きしめてくれるママも、質のよい肉を作るための管理として説明がつく。第1話の時点で描かれた幸福な孤児院の描写が、真相が割れた瞬間にすべて別の意味で読み直される作りになっており、以後、読者は同じ場面を二重に見ることになる。愛情と飼育が矛盾しないという設計は、家庭や学校のように子どもを守るとされる場所を、そのまま裏返す装置として働く。作中では、飼育監であるイザベラ自身がかつて農園で育った子どもだったことも明かされ、加害と被害が一人の中で重なる。反転は一度きりの仕掛けではなく、以後の世界設定の説明にも同じ形で繰り返される。

頭脳戦から世界の仕組みへ、ギアが変わる

1巻から5巻までは、閉じた屋敷の中で子どもと大人が情報を奪い合う話である。武力の差が絶対的なので、勝負は誰が何を知っていると相手に思わせるかに絞られ、密室ものの緊張が保たれる。壁を越えた6巻以降、この条件は解ける。舞台は外の世界に広がり、鬼の社会構造、千年前の約束、実験施設、王家と五摂家といった設定の説明が物語の主な仕事になっていく。この移行は作品の射程を広げた一方で、密室の頭脳戦を評価していた読者との間に落差も生んだ。前半と後半では、面白さの種類がはっきり違う。どちらを本体と見るかで作品の評価が分かれるのは、この構造の変化に由来していると読まれている。連載の折り返しでジャンルがほぼ入れ替わる作品であり、どこまで読んだかによって、人に薦めるときの言葉も変わってくる。

結末の受け取られ方

終盤の展開については、連載当時から読者の評価が割れた。王都の決着とGFハウス奪還が短い巻数で処理されたこと、七つの壁の設定が十分に展開されないまま約束の結び直しへ進んだこと、エマの代償の描き方が唐突に見えることなどが、駆け足だという受け取り方につながった。一方で、全員で人間の世界へ行くという願いの中にエマ自身が入らなかったという結末は、この作品が最初から掲げていた誰も切り捨てないという原則の代価を、最後に主人公一人が払う形にしたものだとして支持する読み方もある。どちらも読者の解釈であり、作中で説明されている事柄ではない。ここでは、賛否が分かれたという事実だけを書いておく。作者の側が終盤の構想や巻数の都合について公に説明した資料は、ここでは確認できていない。

アニメ第2期の大幅な省略

テレビアニメ第1期（2019年）は原作1巻から5巻までの脱獄までを扱い、原作に近い形で作られた。第2期（2021年1月から3月）は1クールで最終回まで進めるため、原作の大きな部分を省いている。エマが密猟者に捕らわれる秘密の猟場ゴールディ・ポンドの一連（原作8巻65話から11巻95話）が丸ごと落ち、シェルターで出会うユウゴ（原作6巻52話から13巻112話に登場）も出てこない。七つの壁という語が持っていた役割も縮小された。この改変には批判が集まり、原作の未読者と既読者で見えている物語がかなり違う状態になっている。この解説は原作漫画を基準にしており、アニメでの改変や省略、2020年公開の実写映画での再構成については扱わない。

Kindness that is also good animal husbandry

The premise turns on one point: the reason these children are raised so carefully is that they are being fattened. The nutritious food, the daily tests, the mother who holds them, all of it makes sense as quality control for meat. The happy orphanage of chapter 1 is written so that every detail can be reread with the opposite meaning the moment the truth lands, and from then on the reader sees each scene twice. A design in which love and livestock management do not contradict each other works as a device for inverting exactly those places, homes and schools, that are supposed to protect children. The story also reveals that Isabella, the breeder, was raised on a farm herself, so perpetrator and victim occupy the same person. The inversion is not a one-time trick; the same shape recurs in how the wider world is explained.

The gearshift from a locked-room game to a world's mechanism

Volumes 1 through 5 are children and an adult trading information inside a closed house. The gap in physical power is absolute, so the contest narrows to what each side can make the other believe it knows, and the tension is that of a locked-room thriller. Once the wall is crossed in volume 6, that condition dissolves. The setting opens out, and the main work of the story becomes exposition: demon society, the thousand-year-old promise, the experimental facilities, the royal house and the regent families. The shift expanded the story's reach, and it also opened a gap with readers who had come for the locked-room game. The front half and the back half are pleasurable in different ways. Which half a reader takes as the real book tends to determine how they rate the series, and that is generally traced to this structural change.

How the ending landed

Reader opinion on the final stretch split while it was still running. The capital's resolution and the retaking of Grace Field were handled in relatively few volumes; the Seven Walls material moved to the reforging of the promise without being developed much; the way Emma's price is presented struck many readers as abrupt. Those complaints add up to a common verdict that the ending was rushed. Against that, some readers defend the shape of it: an ending in which the wish that everyone reaches the human world excludes Emma herself puts the cost of the series' founding principle, that nobody is left behind, on the protagonist alone. Both of these are readings, not statements the story makes. What can be recorded as fact is only that opinion divided.

How much the second anime season cut

The first anime season (2019) covered volumes 1 through 5, up to the escape, and stayed close to the manga. The second season (January to March 2021) compressed everything remaining into a single cour and dropped large portions of the source. The entire Goldy Pond sequence, where Emma is taken by poachers (volume 8 chapter 65 through volume 11 chapter 95), is gone, and Yugo, the escapee met at the shelter (present in the manga from volume 6 chapter 52 through volume 13 chapter 112), never appears. The role of the Seven Walls was reduced as well. The changes drew heavy criticism, and viewers who came in through the anime and readers of the manga are effectively holding different stories. This explainer follows the manga and does not cover the anime's cuts or the restructuring done for the 2020 live-action film.

What we could not confirm

  • The mapping of arcs to volume and chapter ranges (the Grace Field escape as volumes 1-5, Goldy Pond as volume 8 chapter 65 through volume 11 chapter 95, and so on) comes from fan sites and explainer articles and was not confirmed against a Shueisha primary source.
  • Lines attributed to Emma and the others in the final chapter are paraphrases based on Japanese explainer sites, not verbatim quotations from the manga.
  • Whether Emma's memories ever return is not stated in the story and could not be confirmed. Nothing here says that they do.
  • The Comic Natalie article on the conclusion could only be confirmed from its headline; its body could not be opened. The creators' comments were confirmed only as reported by Anime Anime.
