東京では、人を食べなければ生きられない喰種が人間に紛れて暮らしている。見た目は人間と変わらず、人間の食べ物は受けつけず、赫子と呼ばれる器官を体から出して武器にする。喰種対策局CCGは捜査官を送り込み、喰種を駆逐する側として動いている。上井大学の一年生・金木研は、読書が好きで気の弱い学生だった。喫茶店あんていくで見かけた神代利世に惹かれ、二人で歩いた夜に襲われる。利世は喰種であり、金木は食われかけたところに工事の鉄骨が落ちてきて、二人とも重傷を負う。搬送先の病院で行われたのは、瀕死の利世の臓器を金木に移植する手術だった。目覚めた金木は、人間の食事をいっさい受けつけない体になっている。人と喰種のどちらでもある半喰種として、金木はあんていくの人々に匿われ、人を襲わずに生きる方法を教わっていく。だが喰種の側にも派閥と組織があり、駆逐する側にも家族があり事情がある。どちらにも属せない体は、双方の争いのちょうど真ん中へ引き寄せられていく。

Synopsis

In Tokyo, ghouls live hidden among humans. They look like anyone else, cannot digest human food, and fight by extruding an organ called a kagune. The Commission of Counter Ghoul, the CCG, sends investigators out to exterminate them. Ken Kaneki is a first-year university student, bookish and easily pushed around. He is drawn to Rize Kamishiro, a woman he keeps seeing at a coffee shop called Anteiku, and on the night they walk out together she attacks him. Rize is a ghoul. She is about to eat him when steel beams fall from a construction site and critically injure them both. At the hospital, surgeons transplant organs from the dying Rize into Kaneki. He wakes up unable to keep down human food. As a one-eyed ghoul, half human and half not, he is taken in by the staff at Anteiku and taught how to survive without attacking anyone. But the ghoul side has factions and organizations of its own, and the people hunting them have families and reasons too. A body that belongs to neither side gets pulled toward the exact center of the fight between them.

    前半は、金木がどう食べるかの話である。人間の食事を受けつけない体になった学生が、喫茶店あんていくで働きながら、人を襲わずに生きる方法と、喰種にも生活があることを学んでいく。霧嶋董香、笛口母娘、そして人を美食として追う月山習が現れ、CCGの捜査官の側にも家族と信条があることが描かれる。転機は多国籍組織アオギリの樹による拉致で、金木はヤモリによる長時間の拷問を受け、その果てに自分が喰種であることを引き受ける。白髪になって現れた金木は、守られる側から食う側へ回る。ここで読者が最初に好きになった内気な主人公は一度失われ、以後は別の速度で動く人物として物語を引っ張ることになる。

    後半は、居場所を失う話に絞られていく。喫茶店あんていくの店長・芳村が隻眼の梟と呼ばれる大物喰種であることが明かされ、CCGは総力を挙げて梟討伐作戦を実行する。あんていくに集まっていた者たちは戦い、店は失われ、多くが死ぬ。金木はCCG最強の捜査官・有馬貴将と対峙し、両眼を貫かれて敗れ、そのまま連行される。無印はここで終わる。主人公は勝たず、逃げ切らず、敵側に捕らわれたまま物語が閉じるという、少年誌では取りにくい終わり方である。この宙づりが、そのまま続篇『東京喰種:re』の出発点になる。あんていくに集まっていたのは、人を襲わずに生きようとしてきた者たちであり、その場所が真っ先に潰れるという順番自体が、この作品の容赦のなさを示している。

    佐々木琲世として

    『:re』1〜9巻／第1〜90話前後

    続篇は、約2年後のCCGから始まる。主人公として登場するのは佐々木琲世という捜査官で、喰種の力を移植された若手部隊クインクス班を率いている。読者にはこの人物が金木研だと分かるが、本人には記憶がない。オークション掃討戦、月山家掃討戦と任務が重なるなかで、封じられていた人格と記憶が戻ってくる。監獄コクリアでの有馬貴将との対峙は、この作品の転換点である。有馬は自らの敗北を金木に引き受けさせ、隻眼の王という立場を渡す。同時に、CCGを支配する和修家が人間ではないこと、白日庭と呼ばれる施設で子を作り続けてきたことが明かされ、人間対喰種という対立の枠組み自体が組み替えられる。

    終盤の中心にいるのは旧多二福である。和修の血を引くこの男は、CCGとVと道化のどれにも身を置き、父を殺して局長の座に就き、すべてを駒として動かしていた。金木の側は黒山羊を組織して抵抗するが、旧多は金木にオッガイを大量に喰わせ、金木を竜と呼ばれる巨大な肉塊に変えてしまう。竜は東京を内側から食い破り、街を壊し、人間を喰種化させる毒をまき散らす。人間も喰種もこのままでは生き延びられないという状況になって初めて、CCGと喰種は共同戦線を組む。物語の対立軸は、どちらが勝つかではなく、両方が生き残れる形をどう作るかに移り、地下24区での決着へ向かう。

How the story is built

  1. Setup

    Becoming a half-ghoul

    Tokyo Ghoul vols. 1-8 / roughly chapters 1-80

    The first stretch is about how Kaneki eats. A student whose body rejects human food takes a job at the coffee shop Anteiku and learns both how to live without attacking anyone and that ghouls have lives. Touka Kirishima, the Fueguchi mother and daughter, and Shu Tsukiyama, who treats people as cuisine, come in, and the CCG investigators on the other side are given families and convictions of their own. The turn comes when the organization Aogiri Tree abducts him and Yamori tortures him at length. Kaneki comes out of it accepting that he is a ghoul, his hair turned white, and moves from the protected side to the eating side. The shy protagonist readers first got attached to is taken away here, and from this point a different person, moving at a different speed, carries the story.

  2. Development

    Anteiku falls, and Kisho Arima

    Tokyo Ghoul vols. 9-14 / chapters 81-143

    The back half narrows to losing a place to belong. Yoshimura, who runs Anteiku, is revealed to be the major ghoul known as the One-Eyed Owl, and the CCG mounts a full-scale operation against him. The people who gathered at the shop fight, the shop is destroyed, and many of them die. Kaneki faces Kisho Arima, the CCG's strongest investigator, who drives his weapon through both of Kaneki's eyes; Kaneki loses and is taken away. That is where the original series ends. The protagonist does not win and does not escape; the story closes with him in enemy hands. That unresolved state is precisely the starting position for the sequel, Tokyo Ghoul:re.

  3. Turn

    Living as Haise Sasaki

    Tokyo Ghoul:re vols. 1-9 / roughly chapters 1-90

    The sequel opens inside the CCG about two years later. Its protagonist is an investigator named Haise Sasaki, who leads the Quinx Squad, young officers surgically given ghoul abilities. Readers know he is Ken Kaneki; he does not. Across the auction raid and the Tsukiyama family operation, the sealed personality and its memories return. The confrontation with Arima in the Cochlea prison is the hinge of the whole series: Arima makes Kaneki take his defeat and hands over the position of One-Eyed King. In the same stretch it comes out that the Washu family running the CCG are not human and have been producing children at a facility called the Sunlit Garden, which rewrites the humans-versus-ghouls frame the series had been running on.

  4. Resolution

    The Washu secret, and the Dragon

    Tokyo Ghoul:re vols. 10-16 / roughly chapters 91-179

    The late series turns on Nimura Furuta. Carrying Washu blood, he holds positions inside the CCG, inside V and among the Clowns at once, kills his father to take the bureau chairmanship, and treats every organization he belongs to as a tool. Kaneki's side organizes as Goat and resists, but Furuta feeds Kaneki an enormous number of Oggai and turns him into the vast mass of flesh known as the Dragon. The Dragon eats Tokyo from the inside, wrecks the city and spreads a toxin that turns humans into ghouls. Only when neither humans nor ghouls can survive as things stand do the CCG and the ghouls form a joint front. The axis of the story shifts from who wins to what arrangement lets both sides live, and moves toward a resolution in the underground 24th ward.

旧多二福の正体は、和修の血を引く者だった。喰種と人間の混血として白日庭で生まれ、父である和修常吉を殺してCCGの局長の座に就き、CCGとVと道化のどこにも属しながら、そのすべてを道具として動かしていた。第1話で神代利世に鉄骨を落とし、金木研を半喰種にした事故を仕組んだのもこの男である。物語の始まりが偶然ではなかったことが、ここで明かされる。 旧多は金木にオッガイを大量に喰わせ、金木を竜と呼ばれる巨大な肉塊へと変貌させる。竜は東京を内側から食い破り、街を壊し、人間を喰種化させる毒と、竜遺児と呼ばれる存在を大量に生む。人間にも喰種にも逃げ場がなくなったところで、CCGと喰種は初めて共同戦線を組む。捜査官と喰種が並んで動き、竜の内部から金木が取り戻される。救い出したのは霧嶋絢都である。その後、両者の協力のもとで金木と絢都は地下24区へ向かう。 最後の決着は24区の底でつく。赫者化して抗った旧多は敗れ、金木の一撃に胸を貫かれる。死に際に旧多が漏らすのは、普通に生きたかったという言葉であり、彼が最後に見るのは愛した神代利世の幻である。世界を憎み尽くしたように振る舞ってきた男の動機が、そこで初めて剥き出しになる。倒すべき敵として置かれていた人物が、最も普通の願いを持っていたという反転で、この作品の主題は閉じられる。 最終話は、その戦いから六年後を描く。CCGに代わる新しい組織のもとで、人間と喰種は歩み寄りを始めている。ただし和解は完了していない。毒を持つ竜遺児との戦いは続いており、共存は達成された状態ではなく、続いている作業として描かれる。金木研は生きており、霧嶋董香と暮らし、二人の間には娘がいる。永近英良は各国を回って共同戦線の活動を広げ、鈴屋什造は竜将と呼ばれる地位に就き、篠原幸紀は再生医療で回復して鈴屋と再会している。滝澤政道は竜との戦い以降、行方が知れない。人と喰種のどちらでもない体で始まった話は、どちらでもある子どもがいる日常で終わる。

The ending

Nimura Furuta turns out to carry Washu blood. Born at the Sunlit Garden as a cross between human and ghoul, he killed his father Tsuneyoshi Washu to take the CCG chairmanship, and held places inside the CCG, V and the Clowns while using all of them as instruments. He is also the one who engineered the accident in chapter 1, dropping the steel beams on Rize Kamishiro and turning Kaneki into a half-ghoul. The beginning of the story was not an accident, and that is revealed here. Furuta feeds Kaneki a huge number of Oggai and transforms him into the enormous mass of flesh called the Dragon. The Dragon eats Tokyo from the inside, destroys the city, and produces both a toxin that turns humans into ghouls and the beings known as Dragon orphans. With neither side left anywhere to run, the CCG and the ghouls form a joint front for the first time. Investigators and ghouls work side by side, and Kaneki is pulled back out of the Dragon's interior; Ayato Kirishima is the one who gets him out. With both sides cooperating, Kaneki and Ayato then head down into the 24th ward. The last fight is settled at the bottom of that ward. Furuta goes kakuja and loses, and Kaneki's strike goes through his chest. Dying, he lets out that he wanted to live an ordinary life, and what he sees at the end is a vision of Rize, whom he loved. The motive of a man who behaved as though he despised the entire world is exposed only at that point. The figure set up as the enemy to be defeated turns out to have held the most ordinary wish there is, and the series closes its theme on that reversal. The final chapter is set six years after the fight. Under a new organization that has replaced the CCG, humans and ghouls have begun to meet each other partway. The reconciliation is not finished: the fight against the toxic Dragon orphans continues, and coexistence is shown as ongoing work rather than an achieved state. Ken Kaneki is alive, living with Touka Kirishima, and they have a daughter. Hideyoshi Nagachika travels between countries expanding the joint front, Juzo Suzuya holds a senior rank in the new organization, and Yukinori Shinohara has recovered through regenerative medicine and been reunited with Suzuya. Seido Takizawa has been missing since the fight with the Dragon. A story that started with a body that was neither human nor ghoul ends in an ordinary life with a child who is both.

解説

食べなければ生きられないという設定

この作品の喰種は、悪意で人を襲う怪物ではない。人間の食べ物を受けつけない体を持ち、人を食べなければ死ぬという条件のもとで生きている。だから作中の喰種には、餓えを抑える工夫があり、自殺者の遺体を回収する流通があり、家族があり、店があり、就職の悩みがある。同時に、駆逐する側のCCG捜査官にも家族と信念があり、殺された同僚がいる。どちらの側にも生活と正義があるため、対立はどちらかが悪いという構図に落ちない。金木がその中間に置かれるのは、両方の言い分を同時に背負わせるためであり、その結果として彼は、どちらの側からも裏切り者になりうる位置に立ち続ける。食の禁忌という一点を設定の中心に据えたことが、この構図をすべて支えている。

主人公を二度こわす構造

本作は、読者が追いかけてきた主人公を二度取り上げる。一度目は無印のヤモリによる拷問で、内気な学生だった金木は白髪の別人のようになり、人を食うことを引き受けて戻ってくる。二度目は無印の結末で、有馬に敗れて両眼を貫かれ、続篇では佐々木琲世という別の名前と記憶を持つ捜査官として登場する。読者は金木の正体を知りながら、当人が思い出さない時間を長く読まされることになる。人格を作り替えられた人物が、それでも同じ選択を繰り返すのかを問う作りであり、記憶が戻ったあとの金木が、以前の自分の判断をどう引き受けるかが後半の主題になる。主人公の同一性そのものを賭けの対象にした構成として読まれている。同じ顔で別の名を名乗る人物を主人公の席に据え直すという判断は、週刊連載としてはかなりの賭けだった。

無印と『:re』を一続きとして読む

本作は途中で連載をいったん終え、タイトルを変えて再開している。無印は主人公が敵に捕らわれた状態で閉じ、『:re』は約2年後、別の名前と顔つきになった同一人物から始まる。第二部として通し番号を続けるのではなく新シリーズとして出したことで、読者は新規参入者と同じ地点に一度置かれ、主人公が誰かを知っている状態で知らないふりをして読むという奇妙な位置に立たされる。この構成が成立するのは、無印の結末が勝利でも脱出でもなかったからで、宙づりのまま終わったことが続篇の前提になっている。二作を分けて数えると全14巻と全16巻だが、物語としては切れておらず、片方だけでは結末に届かない。途中でタイトルを変えたことで新規の読者は入りやすくなった一方、二作が別の作品だと誤解される事態も起きている。

アニメ版と原作の差

テレビアニメ第1期（2014年）は無印の前半を扱い、第2期にあたる東京喰種√A（2015年）は原作と異なる筋立てを採った。『:re』のアニメ（2018年）は原作の内容を大幅に圧縮しており、原作を読んでいるかどうかで見えている物語がかなり違う。実写映画も2017年と2019年に公開されている。この解説は原作漫画を基準にしており、アニメでの改変や省略、実写版の再構成については扱わない。とくに終盤は、誰がいつ何をしたかが版によって食い違うため、どの版の話をしているかを分けて読む必要がある。原作の側でも、金木の内面を描く場面は絵で処理される部分が多く、台詞として説明されない箇所が残る。アニメから入った読者と原作の読者では、旧多二福の位置づけや終盤の印象がかなり違っている。

Notes

A species that cannot live without eating people

Ghouls here are not monsters who attack out of malice. Their bodies reject human food, and they die if they do not eat people. So the ghouls in this story have workarounds for hunger, a supply chain that collects the bodies of suicides, families, businesses, and worries about employment. On the other side, CCG investigators have families and convictions and colleagues who were killed. Because both sides have lives and a case to make, the conflict never collapses into one side being evil. Kaneki is placed between them so that he has to carry both arguments at once, and as a result he stays in a position where either side can call him a traitor. The single decision to build the premise on a food taboo is what holds this entire structure up.

Breaking the protagonist twice

The series takes its protagonist away from readers twice. The first time is Yamori's torture in the original run: the shy student comes back white-haired, effectively another person, having accepted that he eats people. The second is at the end of the original run, when Arima drives a weapon through both of his eyes and the sequel reintroduces him as an investigator with a different name and no memories. Readers spend a long stretch knowing who Haise Sasaki is while he does not. The construction asks whether a person whose personality has been remade will still make the same choices, and how the restored Kaneki takes responsibility for what his earlier self decided becomes the subject of the back half. It reads as a series that put the protagonist's continuity itself on the table.

Reading the original and :re as one story

The series stopped once and restarted under a changed title. The original closes with its protagonist in enemy hands; :re opens about two years later on the same person wearing a different name and a different face. By launching it as a new series rather than continuing the numbering as a second part, the work puts returning readers on the same footing as new ones for a while, in the odd position of knowing who the protagonist is while reading as though they do not. This only works because the original did not end in a victory or an escape; the unresolved ending is the sequel's precondition. Counted separately the two run to 14 and 16 volumes, but the story does not break in between, and neither half reaches the ending on its own.

The anime versus the manga

The first anime season (2014) covered the front half of the original manga, and the second, Tokyo Ghoul Root A (2015), went with a different storyline from the manga. The :re anime (2018) compressed the source heavily, so what viewers see and what readers see diverge considerably. Live-action films were released in 2017 and 2019. This explainer follows the manga and does not cover the anime's changes and omissions or the live-action restructuring. That matters most in the late series, where accounts of who did what and when do not agree across versions. Even in the manga, a good deal of Kaneki's interior life is handled through art rather than dialogue, and some of it is never spelled out.
