無実の罪を着せられ、リオネス王国から追放された伝説の騎士団『七つの大罪』。王国の聖騎士たちがクーデターを起こして国王を幽閉し、圧政を敷くなか、唯一難を逃れた王女エリザベスは、七つの大罪を捜し出して王国を取り戻すため旅に出る。最初に出会ったのは、辺境で酒場を営む小柄な青年メリオダスだった。彼こそが七つの大罪の団長であり、エリザベスの申し出を受けて仲間探しに乗り出す。巨人族の少女ディアンヌ、霊槍を操る妖精王キング、不死身の体を持つ盗賊バン、人形のような体を持つゴウセルら、それぞれ人には言えない過去や罪を背負ったかつての仲間たちが次々と合流し、七つの大罪は聖騎士たちとの対立へと踏み出していく。しかし聖騎士団の裏には、はるか昔に女神族と戦い封印されたはずの魔神族の生き残りが糸を引いており、メリオダス自身の正体と、彼とエリザベスの間にある三千年に及ぶ因縁が、王国の運命そのものと結びついていることが少しずつ明らかになっていく。

Synopsis

The Seven Deadly Sins were a legendary order of knights framed for a crime they didn't commit and driven out of the kingdom of Liones. Years later, the Holy Knights who run the kingdom stage a coup, imprison the king, and start ruling by force. Princess Elizabeth, the one member of the royal family who escapes, sets out to track down the Seven Deadly Sins and win the kingdom back. The first one she finds is Meliodas, a small, easygoing young man running a traveling tavern -- who turns out to be the Sins' own captain. With Elizabeth's request in hand, Meliodas sets off to reassemble his old team: Diane, a giant with the strength to match her size; King, the Fairy King, who fights with a spirit spear; Ban, a thief who cannot be killed; Gowther, whose body is closer to a living doll than a man -- each carrying a past, and often a sin, of their own. Together they move to confront the Holy Knights ruling Liones. But behind the Holy Knights lurks something older: survivors of the Demon Clan, thought to have been sealed away after a war with the Goddess Clan three thousand years earlier. Bit by bit, the story reveals that Meliodas's own true identity, and a three-thousand-year bond between him and Elizabeth, are tied directly to the fate of the kingdom itself.

    With the king imprisoned after a coup by the kingdom's own Holy Knights, Princess Elizabeth -- the one royal who got away -- sets out to find the Seven Deadly Sins, a legendary order exiled on false charges. The story kicks into gear when the tavern keeper Meliodas turns out to be the Sins' own captain, and traveling with Elizabeth, he tracks down his old comrades one by one: Diane, a giant with matching strength; King, the Fairy King and wielder of a spirit spear; Ban, a thief who can't be killed; and others scattered across the land. Dodging Holy Knight pursuit and sabotage along the way, the Seven Deadly Sins gradually move toward retaking the capital and confronting the Holy Knights who now run it.

    The Demon Clan's threat, collision with the Ten Commandments

    Behind the Holy Knights, the Ten Commandments -- the Demon Clan's elite unit, supposedly sealed away since the war with the Goddess Clan three thousand years ago -- returns, and the fighting spreads across the whole continent, Liones included. Each of the Seven Deadly Sins ends up facing a member of the Ten Commandments they have no real chance of beating alone, and the group repeatedly comes close to losing someone or falling apart. Along the way, it comes out to the rest of the group that Meliodas was born into the Demon Clan and once led the Ten Commandments himself, and that Elizabeth carries the blood of the Goddess Clan and has lived through countless past lives -- with the scale of the war and the size of their shared secret growing side by side.

  3. Turn

    A three-thousand-year bond, and a curse

    The story flashes back three thousand years to the age of the original war to lay out who Meliodas and Elizabeth really are. Once the commander of the Ten Commandments, Meliodas fell for Elizabeth -- then of the Goddess Clan -- and turned against his own people, working with her toward peace between the Demon Clan and the Goddess Clan, only for the two of them to be killed by the Demon King and the Supreme Deity for it. The curses laid on them in that moment are revealed here: Meliodas is doomed to keep coming back to life no matter how many times he dies, and Elizabeth is doomed to be reborn again and again, dying within three days each time she recovers the memory of who she was. Knowing this history, the rest of the group chooses to keep fighting alongside the two of them anyway.

  4. Resolution

    The holy war against the Demon King

    The sealed Demon King himself returns, and the conflict grows into an all-out final war between a combined army of humans, the Goddess Clan, fairies, and giants against the Demon Clan. Zeldris, Meliodas's own younger brother and a former member of the Ten Commandments, is among the demons who defect to the human side, and the final battle plays out on two fronts at once: an outward assault on the Demon King's body, and an attempt to reach him from within. What happens to the three-thousand-year curse binding Meliodas and Elizabeth is bound up directly with how this last battle turns out.

The ending

The combined army throws everything it has at the resurrected Demon King. Escanor, having pushed his own sun-given power past its limit during the battle, burns away and disappears after finally telling Merlin how he feels -- leaving the field before the Demon King is brought down. The Seven Deadly Sins land a combined attack on the Demon King's body from the outside, while inside the Demon King's own mind, Zeldris -- Meliodas's brother and a former member of the Ten Commandments -- and Gelda, the vampire he has fallen for, work to reach the Demon King's will directly. The outer assault and the inner one together finally bring him down. With that victory, the curses laid on Meliodas and Elizabeth three thousand years earlier are finally broken: Meliodas's Eternal Life, which kept dragging him back from death, and Elizabeth's Perpetual Reincarnation, which sent her through life after life and killed her within three days of each time she remembered who she was. No longer doomed to be torn apart, the two of them go on to become king and queen of Liones. The rest of the Seven Deadly Sins settle into new lives of their own as well. Meliodas and Elizabeth have a son, Tristan; Ban and Elaine marry and settle in the Fairy King's Forest, where the two of them first met, and have a son named Lancelot; King and Diane marry and build a kingdom where the Fairy Clan and the Giant Clan live together. Gowther sets off to work out what he himself is capable of. What began as a story about a knighthood framed for a crime it never committed closes with the Sins settling both the crime and the ancient feud behind it on their own terms, each finding a new place to belong.

A classic team-up structure carrying an enormous backstory

The opening structure -- a princess and a framed knight tracking down his old comrades one at a time -- is about as conventional a team-up story as shonen manga gets. But behind it sits a war between the Goddess Clan and the Demon Clan three thousand years earlier that the story hasn't even hinted at yet, and as it unfolds, individual characters' pasts get pulled from palace-level political drama into a war between entire races. The gap between the easy tone of the early team-up chapters and the sheer weight of the war waiting behind them is what defines how far this story ends up reaching, and it shapes the story's texture for readers who remember how light it started out.

A story of sin and forgiveness told through a curse

Meliodas's curse of dying and always coming back, and Elizabeth's curse of being reborn again and again, dying within three days of recovering her memories each time, are framed as punishment for the two of them trying to stop the war between the Demon Clan and the Goddess Clan three thousand years ago. The fact that the two of them can never stay together no matter how many times they meet drives the tension running through the entire series, and the question of whether that curse can ever be broken pulls the story forward all the way to the holy war.
