江戸の空に宇宙船が浮かんでいる。天人と呼ばれる異星人に開国を迫られた国は、彼らを受け入れる代わりに廃刀令を敷き、侍から刀を取り上げた。侍が食い詰め者になったその江戸で、坂田銀時は万事屋銀ちゃんという看板を掲げ、家賃も払えないまま何でも屋を営んでいる。甘いものと少年誌が好きで、やる気がなく、いざとなると人を放っておけない男である。そこへ、道場を守るために弟子入りを願い出た志村新八と、地球に流れ着いた夜兎族の少女・神楽が転がり込み、三人の万事屋ができあがる。仕事は猫探しから危険な組織の相手まで幅がひろく、隣近所には真選組と名乗る警察組織、遊郭の吉原、かぶき町の顔役たちがいて、依頼のたびに顔ぶれが増えていく。だが銀時には、かつて攘夷戦争で白夜叉と呼ばれた過去がある。同じ塾で学んだ桂小太郎は今も攘夷志士を率い、高杉晋助はこの国そのものを壊そうとしている。三人が師と仰いだ吉田松陽が何者だったのか、なぜ失われたのか。笑い話の連続に見えていた日常は、その過去に触れるたびに、少しずつ本筋の輪郭を見せていく。

Synopsis

Spaceships hang over Edo. Aliens called Amanto forced the country open, and the shogunate bought peace by banning swords. Samurai became a class with nothing left to do. In that Edo, Sakata Gintoki hangs out a sign reading Yorozuya Gin-chan and runs an odd-jobs business he can barely keep the rent on. He loves sweets and shonen magazines, does as little as possible, and cannot walk away from someone in trouble. Two people move in on him: Shimura Shinpachi, who asks to be taken on as a student in order to save his family dojo, and Kagura, a girl of the Yato clan who drifted to Earth. The three of them become the Yorozuya. The jobs run from finding lost cats to tangling with people who kill for a living, and the neighborhood keeps adding regulars: the police force called the Shinsengumi, the pleasure district of Yoshiwara, the fixers of Kabuki District. But Gintoki has a past. In the Joui war he was known as the White Demon. Katsura Kotaro, who studied at the same school, is still leading revolutionaries; Takasugi Shinsuke, from that same school, now wants to burn the country down. Who their teacher Yoshida Shoyo really was, and how he was lost, is the question the comedy keeps circling.

    入口は一話完結のギャグである。天人の来航と廃刀令という時代設定は最初から示されるが、物語はそれを使って世界の危機を描くのではなく、家賃の督促、猫探し、割に合わない依頼を積んでいく。この段階で作られるのは事件ではなく関係で、志村新八と神楽が万事屋に住み着き、真選組の近藤・土方・沖田、居酒屋や吉原の面々が、依頼のたびに常連として定着していく。同時に、銀時が攘夷戦争を戦った侍だったこと、桂が今も志士を続けていることが、笑いの合間に短く差し込まれる。読者はまず笑って人物を覚え、その人物が背負っているものを後から知る。この順番が最後まで本作の設計であり、ギャグ回で貯めた愛着を長篇で使うという運用が、ここで始まっている。

    笑いの下の攘夷戦争

    11〜30巻／紅桜篇（第89〜97訓）から吉原炎上篇（第210〜228訓）

    紅桜篇で、作品は初めて長篇のシリアスを通す。妖刀をめぐって高杉晋助の鬼兵隊が現れ、銀時は仲間を守るために本気で刀を抜く。以後、真選組動乱篇では組織の内側の裏切りと近藤・土方・沖田の関係が、吉原炎上篇では地下遊郭を支配する夜王と神楽の一族の話が、それぞれ十数話から二十話をかけて描かれる。共通しているのは、敵が運命や国家ではなく、目の前の誰かの人生を握っている個人だという点である。長篇が終わればまた一話完結のギャグに戻り、次の長篇でその落差がまた使われる。笑いと殺陣を切り替えるのではなく、同じ人物に両方をやらせるこの往復が、以後の展開の土台になっていく。

    幕府が倒れ、師の正体が割れる

    51〜65巻／将軍暗殺篇（第502〜524訓）から烙陽決戦篇（第552〜595訓）

    将軍暗殺篇から、話は江戸の内輪もめの外へ出る。将軍・徳川茂茂が殺され、幕府の裏で国を動かしてきた天導衆が前面に出る。さらば真選組篇で真選組はいったん解体され、烙陽決戦篇では神楽の故郷が舞台になり、夜兎族の父・星海坊主と兄・神威をめぐる因縁に決着がつく。並行して明かされるのが、銀時・桂・高杉の師である吉田松陽の正体である。松陽は虚と呼ばれる不死の存在から生まれた人格であり、銀時はかつて戦場で、仲間を助けるために自らその師の首を斬っていた。ギャグの街の話として始まったものが、ここで一人の不死者をめぐる因縁に接続される。以後の対立軸は、国でも幕府でもなく、師をどうするかに絞られていく。

    銀ノ魂篇と、二年の空白

    66〜77巻／銀ノ魂篇（第596〜704訓）

    最終長篇は、江戸が焼かれるところから始まる。虚の企てによって地球そのものが戦争の的になり、かぶき町は壊滅し、銀時は死んだものとして扱われる。ここで物語は二年跳ぶ。万事屋は解散し、新八は町の再建に回り、神楽は宇宙へ出て、銀時は消息を絶つ。二年後、虚の不死を利用しようとする一派が動き出したことで三人はふたたび集まり、再建された江戸で最後の戦いに向かう。この二年の空白は、仲間が揃っていることを当たり前にしないための処置として置かれており、再結集そのものが見せ場になる。決戦の舞台は天導衆の船と地球のアルタナが交わる地点で、松下村塾で学んだ銀時・高杉・桂の三人が、それぞれのやり方で師と向き合うことになる。

How the story is built

  1. Setup

    The series opens as episodic comedy. The premise, alien arrival and a sword ban, is laid out early, but the story does not use it to stage a crisis. It uses it to stage small jobs: chasing rent, finding cats, taking work nobody sane would take. What accumulates in this stretch is not plot but relationships. Shinpachi and Kagura move in. The Shinsengumi trio of Kondo, Hijikata and Okita, the bar owners, the Yoshiwara crowd, all settle in as recurring faces one job at a time. In between the jokes, short beats establish that Gintoki fought in the Joui war and that Katsura is still at it. Readers laugh first and learn what these people carry later. That order is the design of the whole series, and the practice of banking affection in gag chapters to spend it in long arcs starts here.

  2. Development

    The war underneath the jokes

    Vols. 11-30 / Benizakura arc (Lessons 89-97) through Yoshiwara in Flames (Lessons 210-228)

    The Benizakura arc is the first sustained serious storyline. A cursed blade brings out Takasugi Shinsuke and his Kiheitai, and Gintoki draws his sword in earnest to protect the people around him. After that, the Shinsengumi Crisis arc turns on betrayal inside the police force and on what Kondo, Hijikata and Okita mean to each other, and Yoshiwara in Flames takes on the man who rules the underground pleasure district and the truth about Kagura's clan. What these arcs share is that the antagonist is never fate or the state. It is one individual holding someone else's life in his hands. Each arc ends and the series drops back into standalone comedy, so the next arc can use the same drop again. Rather than switching between comedy and swordplay, it makes the same characters carry both.

  3. Turn

    The shogunate falls and the teacher's identity comes out

    Vols. 51-65 / Shogun Assassination (Lessons 502-524) through the Rakuyo Decisive Battle (Lessons 552-595)

    From the Shogun Assassination arc, the story leaves Edo's internal squabbles behind. Shogun Tokugawa Shigeshige is killed, and the Tendoshu, who had been running the country from behind the shogunate, step into view. In Farewell, Shinsengumi the police force is dissolved, and the Rakuyo arc moves to Kagura's homeworld and settles her history with her father Umibozu and her brother Kamui. Alongside this, the identity of Yoshida Shoyo, teacher to Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi, is revealed. Shoyo was a personality born out of an immortal being called Utsuro, and Gintoki, on a battlefield years earlier, cut off his own teacher's head to save his comrades. What began as a comedy about a neighborhood is now attached to one immortal man, and every later conflict narrows to a single question: what to do about the teacher.

  4. Resolution

    The Silver Soul arc and a two-year gap

    Vols. 66-77 / Silver Soul arc (Lessons 596-704)

    The final arc opens with Edo burning. Utsuro's scheme turns the planet itself into a target, Kabuki District is destroyed, and Gintoki is presumed dead. Here the story jumps two years. The Yorozuya dissolves: Shinpachi works on rebuilding the town, Kagura goes to space, Gintoki disappears. Two years on, a faction moving to exploit Utsuro's immortality pulls the three back together, and they head into a last fight in a rebuilt Edo. The gap exists so that having your friends around can stop being taken for granted; the reunion itself is one of the arc's payoffs. The final battle takes place where the Tendoshu's ship meets the planet's Altana, and the three students of the Shoka Sonjuku school each face their teacher in their own way.

結末

結末を開く（最後まで書いてあります）

最終決戦は、松下村塾の三人が虚と向き合う場になる。虚は高杉晋助の肉体を乗っ取るが、高杉は内側から抵抗し続け、銀時と二人がかりで虚を斬る。銀時は、虚を斬ったのはお前の剣だと高杉に言う。高杉は致命傷を負っており、地獄で首を洗って待っていろと言い残して目を閉じる。烙陽決戦篇で受けた傷を抱えたまま二年を過ごしてきた男は、ここで退場する。 残されたのは、虚の中にいた吉田松陽である。暴走を始めたアルタナと兵器を止めるため、松陽は自分の中のアルタナを使い、被害を自分に引き受ける形で事態を収めにかかる。新八と神楽は、松陽を見捨てて逃げることを拒み、万事屋のやり方で最後まで付き合う。真選組の面々も銀時を援護し、銀時は松陽の前に立つ。かつて塾で教わった子どもは、いま江戸の片隅で何でも屋をやっている。こいつらと万事屋をやっていると銀時が告げると、松陽は立派になったと頷き、光に包まれて消える。師をどう救うかという問いへの答えは、連れ帰ることではなく、育った姿を見せて見送ることだった。 最終訓の後半はエピローグで、江戸は復興し、万事屋も真選組も日常に戻っている。桂は幾松と、近藤たちは真選組として、それぞれの場所にいる。銀魂という作品らしく、この後半はほぼ全員参加のギャグとして描かれる。締めくくりには、鬼兵隊の来島また子が龍穴で黒髪の赤ん坊を見つける場面が置かれる。それが高杉だとは作中で言われていない。言われないまま、生まれ直しの余地だけが残される。 最終訓の題は「天然パーマにロクな奴はいない」で、第一訓の「天然パーマに悪い奴はいない」と対になっている。掲載媒体は週刊少年ジャンプからジャンプGIGA、そして公式アプリへと移り、2019年6月20日の配信で15年半の連載が終わった。

The ending

Open the ending (it is given away in full)

The last battle puts the three students of Shoka Sonjuku in front of Utsuro. Utsuro takes over Takasugi Shinsuke's body, but Takasugi keeps fighting from inside it, and together with Gintoki he cuts Utsuro down. Gintoki tells him that the sword that struck Utsuro was his. Takasugi is mortally wounded; he says something to the effect of go wash your neck and wait for me in hell, and closes his eye. The man who had carried a fatal wound out of the Rakuyo arc and lived two more years with it exits here. What remains is Yoshida Shoyo, the person inside Utsuro. To stop the runaway Altana and the weapon it powers, Shoyo uses the Altana within himself and takes the damage onto his own body. Shinpachi and Kagura refuse to run and leave him, staying with him in the way the Yorozuya does everything. The Shinsengumi cover Gintoki, and Gintoki reaches his teacher. The child who once sat in that school now runs an odd-jobs shop in a corner of Edo. When Gintoki tells him he is running the Yorozuya with these people, Shoyo nods and says he has grown into someone fine, and vanishes in light. The answer to how you save your teacher turns out not to be bringing him home. It is showing him what you became and letting him go. The back half of the final chapter is an epilogue. Edo has been rebuilt; the Yorozuya and the Shinsengumi are back to ordinary life. Katsura is with Ikumatsu; Kondo and the others are still the Shinsengumi. In keeping with the series, this second half is played almost entirely as an all-cast gag. It closes with Kijima Matako, of the Kiheitai, finding a black-haired infant at a dragon vein. The story never says that the baby is Takasugi. It leaves the possibility of a rebirth open without confirming it. The title of the final chapter, Lesson 704, pairs with the title of Lesson 1: chapter 1 said there is no such thing as a bad guy with naturally curly hair, and the last one says there is no such thing as a decent one. The series moved from Weekly Shonen Jump to Jump Giga to the official app, and ended with that release on June 20, 2019, fifteen and a half years after it began.

解説

ギャグと本筋を同じ人物で回す

本作の基本設計は、一話完結のギャグ回と数十話の長篇を、同じ登場人物で交互に回すことにある。下ネタとパロディで覚えた人物が、次の長篇では死ぬかもしれない立場に置かれる。ギャグ回は本筋の休憩ではなく、長篇で効かせるための積み立てとして機能しており、読者が笑って好きになった分だけ、その人物が傷つく場面の重さが増す。この往復は週刊連載という形式と相性がよく、連載が長引くほど蓄積が増える性質を持っていた。一方で、同じ設計は終わり方を難しくもする。ギャグでいくらでも続けられる作品が本筋の決着をつけて店じまいするには、笑いの側を一度畳まなければならない。最終訓の前半が決着、後半がほぼ全員参加のギャグという構成は、その二つを両立させるための処理だと読まれている。

侍という言葉の使われ方

作中で侍は、身分でも職業でもなく、守ると決めたものを守り続ける態度として使われる。廃刀令の敷かれた江戸で刀を捨てなかった者が侍と呼ばれ、逆に地位や家名を持つ側は侍として扱われない。銀時が刀を抜く理由は国でも主君でもなく、その場にいる誰かであり、攘夷という言葉も、外敵を追い払う運動というより、それぞれが守るものを持ち続けることの言い換えとして機能していく。桂は志士として、高杉は破壊者として、同じ師から出発しながら別の答えを選ぶ。三人の分岐は思想の対立というより、松陽を失ったあとの生き方の違いとして描かれており、最終決戦がそのまま三者三様の答え合わせになる。幕末の志士の名を借りながら、史実の思想対立をなぞらない作りである。

三度の完結告知と、雑誌を離れた最終回

本作は完結までに掲載媒体を二度変えている。週刊少年ジャンプでの連載は2018年42号でいったん最終回を迎えたが物語は終わらず、続きはジャンプGIGA 2019 WINTER vol.1からvol.3に載り、それでも完結せず、最後は無料の銀魂公式アプリで2019年5月13日から6月20日にかけて配信された。完結が告知されるたびに終わらないという経緯は連載中から作者自身が誌面でネタにしており、報道でも終わる終わる詐欺という言い方で扱われた。結果として、少年誌の看板作品が雑誌を離れ、専用アプリで幕を閉じるという珍しい終わり方になった。単行本は全77巻にまとまり、最終巻は2019年8月2日に発売されている。連載の終わり方そのものが、この作品の性格を最後に一度説明した形になっている。

アニメ・実写と原作の関係

アニメは2006年から断続的に放送され、劇場版やテレビシリーズを重ねたうえで、原作の結末は2021年公開の劇場版・銀魂 THE FINAL が扱った。同作は第699訓から第704訓に相当する部分に新規の内容を加えたものとして案内されており、原作の最終盤をそのまま映像にしたわけではない。実写映画も2017年と2018年に公開され、原作の一部の長篇を再構成している。つまりこの作品は、結末に至る道筋が媒体ごとに少しずつ違う。この解説は原作漫画を基準にしており、アニメや実写での改変・省略、劇場版で加えられた場面については扱わない。どの版の話をしているのかを分けておかないと、誰がいつどうなったかの記述が食い違うので、注意が要る。

Comedy and plot running through the same people

The core design is to alternate standalone gag chapters with arcs dozens of chapters long, using the same cast for both. A character you learned to love through crude jokes and parody is later put in a position where he might die. The gag chapters are not breaks from the plot; they are deposits to be withdrawn during the arcs, and the more you laughed at someone, the more it costs when that person gets hurt. This works well with weekly serialization, since the longer the run, the bigger the deposit. The same design also makes the series hard to end. A story that can generate comedy indefinitely has to close down the comedy side in order to resolve the plot. The structure of the final chapter, resolution in the first half and an all-cast gag in the second, is generally read as the way Sorachi got both halves to land at once.

What the word samurai does here

In this story samurai is not a class or an occupation. It is an attitude: keeping hold of whatever you decided to protect. In an Edo where swords are banned, the people who kept theirs are called samurai, while the people with rank and family names are not treated as samurai at all. Gintoki draws his sword for the person in front of him, never for a country or a lord, and the word Joui, the anti-foreigner cause, gradually becomes shorthand for that same idea rather than a political program. Katsura stays a revolutionary; Takasugi becomes a destroyer; both started from the same teacher. Their split reads less like an ideological argument than like three different ways of living after losing the same person, which is why the final battle works as a settlement of all three at once. The series borrows names from the real end of the Edo period without retracing the actual politics.

Three announced endings, and a finale that left the magazine

The series changed publication venue twice before it finished. Its Weekly Shonen Jump run reached a final chapter in issue 42 of 2018, but the story was not over. It continued in Jump Giga 2019 WINTER volumes 1 through 3, did not finish there either, and was ultimately released on the free official Gintama app between May 13 and June 20, 2019. Sorachi had been joking in print for years about the series that keeps announcing an ending and not ending, and Japanese coverage described it with a phrase that translates roughly as the ending-that-never-ends scam. The result is unusual: a flagship shonen title left its magazine and closed on a dedicated app. The collected edition still runs to 77 volumes, with the last published on August 2, 2019. How the run ended ends up saying something about what kind of series it was.

The manga versus the anime and live-action films

The anime ran in stretches from 2006, across television seasons and films, and the manga's ending was handled by the 2021 feature Gintama THE FINAL. That film is described as adapting the material corresponding to Lessons 699 through 704 plus new content, so it is not a straight transfer of the manga's last stretch. Two live-action films, released in 2017 and 2018, restructure selected arcs. In other words, the road to the ending differs by medium. This explainer is based on the manga. It does not cover cuts or changes made for the anime, the new material added for the film, or the live-action versions. Keeping the versions separate matters here, because otherwise accounts of who died and when will not agree with each other.

  • 篇と巻数の対応（紅桜篇を11〜12巻、銀ノ魂篇を66〜77巻とするなど）は、話数の範囲をピクシブ百科事典の長篇一覧に拠って巻数へ換算したもので、集英社の一次資料では確認できていない。
  • 最終訓の細部（吉田松陽が自身のアルタナを使って暴走を収める処理、エピローグで各人物がどう描かれたか）はファンのブログ記事に拠っており、一次資料で確認できていない。
  • 来島また子が龍穴で見つけた黒髪の赤ん坊が高杉晋助であるとは作中で明言されておらず、確認できない。生まれ直しの示唆として書かれているという以上のことは書けない。
  • 銀ノ魂篇の二年後以降に登場する、虚の不死を利用しようとする一派（星芒教と表記される）の名称と役割は、日本語版ウィキペディアとファンサイトで記述が食い違い、確定できなかったため本文では組織名を出していない。

What we could not confirm

Points we looked for and could not verify. We write only what we could check, and leave this list rather than filling the gaps with guesses.

  • The mapping of arcs to volume numbers (Benizakura as volumes 11-12, Silver Soul as volumes 66-77, and so on) was derived by converting chapter ranges from a fan-compiled arc list on Pixiv Encyclopedia; it could not be confirmed against a Shueisha primary source.
  • Details of the final chapter, including Shoyo using the Altana inside himself to stop the runaway weapon and how individual characters appear in the epilogue, come from fan blog write-ups and were not confirmed against a primary source.
  • The story never states that the black-haired infant Kijima Matako finds at the dragon vein is Takasugi Shinsuke. Nothing beyond the suggestion of a rebirth can be confirmed.
  • The name and role of the faction that moves to exploit Utsuro's immortality after the two-year gap (rendered as Seihokyo in some sources) differ between Japanese Wikipedia and fan sites, so the group is not named in the main text.
  • Japanese Wikipedia contains a line about Takasugi and Katsura heading into space after a fight with Ensho; it did not fit other accounts and was not used.
  • The Comic Natalie and Oricon articles could only be confirmed from headlines and search results; their bodies could not be opened, and the author's comments were not verified directly.
  • The figure of over 73 million copies in circulation (November 2024) comes from Japanese and English Wikipedia and was not confirmed against a Shueisha announcement.
