霊感の強い高校生・黒崎一護は、死神見習いの朽木ルキアと出会い、瀕死の彼女から死神の力を譲り受けてしまう。以来一護は死神代行として、成仏できない魂を導き、悪霊・虚を斬る日々を送るようになる。しかし力を人間に貸したことが咎められ、ルキアは死者の魂が住まう世界・尸魂界へ連れ戻され、処刑を言い渡される。一護は井上織姫・茶渡泰虎・石田雨竜とともに尸魂界へ乗り込み、護廷十三隊の隊士たちと戦いながらルキアの救出を目指す。そこで一護が目の当たりにするのは、五番隊隊長・藍染惣右介の裏切りだった。藍染は崩玉と呼ばれる球体の力で虚の仮面を破り、死神の力を得た虚・破面を生み出して、独自の軍勢を築こうとしていた。一護は仲間とともに藍染との戦いに挑み、自分の内側にある虚の力を制御する修行を重ねていく。長い戦いの果てに藍染を退けた一護だったが、その代償として死神としての力を失ってしまう。そして十七か月が過ぎたころ、滅却師を名乗る一団が尸魂界を襲撃し、彼らの王・ユーハバッハの存在が明らかになっていく。

Synopsis

Ichigo Kurosaki, a high schooler who can already see ghosts, meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper on the verge of death, and ends up taking on her powers to save his family from a Hollow. From then on Ichigo works as a substitute Soul Reaper, guiding lost souls and cutting down Hollows in his spare time. But lending a human his powers is against Soul Society's law, and Rukia is dragged back there to be executed. Ichigo storms Soul Society with Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryu Ishida, fighting his way through its captains and lieutenants to reach her. There he witnesses something nobody expected: Sosuke Aizen, captain of Squad 5, has been playing dead, and he is the true architect behind Rukia's sentence. Using an orb called the Hogyoku, Aizen has been stripping Hollows of their masks to create Arrancar -- Hollows who wield a Soul Reaper's power -- and building an army of his own. Ichigo throws himself into the fight against Aizen, training to control the Hollow power already living inside him. He beats Aizen after a long war, but the win costs him everything: Ichigo loses his Soul Reaper powers entirely. About seventeen months later, a group calling themselves Quincies invades Soul Society, and the identity of their king, Yhwach, starts to come into focus.

    尸魂界を出奔した藍染惣右介は、崩玉の力で虚の仮面を破り、死神の力を得た虚・破面を生み出して、その最上位である十刃（エスパーダ）を従え、虚の世界・虚圏に独自の軍勢を築いていた。一護は死神と虚の双方の力を宿す自分に苦しみながら、仮面の軍勢のもとで虚の力を制御する修行を積む。藍染の手勢に井上織姫を奪われた一護たちは虚圏へ乗り込み、遅れて護廷十三隊も加わって十刃との激戦が続く。やがて藍染は、王鍵を鋳造する材料として一護の住む空座町へ狙いを移し、護廷十三隊は町ごと入れ替えた偽の空座町で藍染を迎え撃つ。追い詰められた一護は、死神の力のすべてと引き換えに放つ最後の月牙天衝・無月で藍染を打ち倒し、崩玉に守られていた藍染は、浦原喜助が仕込んでいた鬼道で封印される。勝利と引き換えに、一護は死神としての力を失う。

    49〜61巻／死神代行消失篇〜千年血戦篇序盤

    死神の力を失った一護は、幽霊も虚も見えないただの高校生として十七か月を過ごすが、護廷十三隊の隊長格が霊圧を込めた刀によって、失った力を取り戻す。だがその平穏は、滅却師を名乗る一団・見えざる帝国の襲撃によって破られる。彼らを率いるのは、滅却師の始祖であり霊王の息子でもあるユーハバッハ。尸魂界は瞬く間に蹂躙され、一度退いた滅却師による二度目の侵攻では、総隊長・山本元柳斎重國さえも討ち取られる。一護は父・黒崎一心から、母・真咲が滅却師であったこと、そして自分が死神と滅却師と人間の血を併せ持つ存在であることを知らされる。斬り折られた斬月は、霊王宮に住まう零番隊の二枚屋王悦の手で打ち直される。隊長たちが次々と卍解を奪われ、あるいは倒れていくなか、一護たちはユーハバッハの本拠へ攻め込むことを決意する。

    High schooler Ichigo Kurosaki takes on the powers of a dying Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, the night a Hollow closes in on his family, and starts hunting Hollows as a substitute Soul Reaper. Classmates Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado awaken to spiritual powers of their own, and Uryu Ishida, a Quincy from the start, joins them, so Ichigo's circle of allies grows. Rukia, having handed her power to a human, is hauled back to Soul Society and sentenced to death. Ichigo's group storms the place, clashing with a wall of Soul Reapers -- Ikkaku Madarame, Kenpachi Zaraki, Byakuya Kuchiki, Renji Abarai -- to reach the execution grounds. Just as everything seems settled, it comes out that Sosuke Aizen, captain of Squad 5, faked his own death, and that he is the one behind the whole plot. What started as a personal rescue mission turns, in an instant, into a war between organizations.

    War with Aizen

    Vols. 21-48 / the Arrancar arc

    Having defected from Soul Society, Aizen has built an army in Hueco Mundo, the Hollows' realm, using the Hogyoku to strip Hollows of their masks and turn them into Arrancar, with the ten strongest of them, the Espada, serving as his officers. Ichigo, wrestling with a body that carries both Soul Reaper and Hollow power, trains with the Visored to bring the Hollow inside him under control. After Aizen's forces take Orihime, Ichigo's group invades Hueco Mundo, and the Gotei 13 joins the war against the Espada. Aizen then turns to Ichigo's hometown of Karakura, which he needs as raw material for the Oken (the Royal Key), and the Soul Reapers meet him in a replica town they have swapped into its place. Cornered, Ichigo trades away every last piece of his Soul Reaper power to land the Final Getsuga Tensho, Mugetsu, and Aizen, kept alive by the Hogyoku, is sealed by a kido Kisuke Urahara had planted in him beforehand. Ichigo wins, and loses his powers with it.

  3. Turn

    Powerless, and an empire nobody saw coming

    Vols. 49-61 / the Lost Agent arc through the early Thousand-Year Blood War

    Stripped of his Soul Reaper power, Ichigo spends seventeen months as an ordinary high schooler who can no longer see ghosts or Hollows at all, until a blade carrying the spirit pressure of the Gotei 13's captains gives back what he lost. That quiet ends when a group calling themselves Quincies -- the Wandenreich -- invades. They are led by Yhwach, progenitor of the Quincies and son of the Soul King. Soul Society is overrun almost instantly; the Quincies pull back, and in their second invasion even Head Captain Genryusai Yamamoto falls. Ichigo learns from his father, Isshin Kurosaki, that his mother Masaki was a Quincy, and that he carries Soul Reaper, Quincy and human blood all at once. His broken Zangetsu is reforged by Oetsu Nimaiya of the Royal Guard. As captain after captain has their bankai stolen or is cut down, Ichigo and his allies decide to strike at Yhwach's home base directly.

    The counterattack on the king

    Vols. 61-74 / the Thousand-Year Blood War arc

    Ichigo's group passes through the Soul King Palace and into the Wandenreich, fighting Yhwach's elite Sternritter across multiple fronts. Uryu Ishida, named as Yhwach's successor, uses that position to pose as a defector and wait for a chance to strike from within. The Gotei 13 captains take back the bankai stolen from them and hold the line, with Shunsui Kyoraku commanding as the new Head Captain. Yhwach absorbs the Soul King and begins remaking the world itself. Cornered again and again by a power that can see the future and rewrite any part of it he dislikes, Ichigo, Uryu, and Sosuke Aizen -- let out of his cell for this one battle -- each break off a piece of that power, and a thousand years of history between Soul Reapers and Quincies is brought to an end.

一護たちは見えざる帝国の中枢で、霊王を取り込んだユーハバッハと直接対峙する。ユーハバッハは未来を見通し、都合の悪い未来を書き換えてしまう力を持ち、一護の斬月を斬り折って幾度も一行を追い詰める。窮地に陥った一護は、かつて敵として戦った月島秀九郎に頼み、折れた斬月に一度も折れたことがないという偽りの来歴を刻み込んでもらったうえで、井上織姫の反転によって刀を取り戻す。ユーハバッハの後継者として敵陣に加わっていた石田雨竜は、決戦の場でユーハバッハに背き、一護とともに攻撃を仕掛ける。囚人房・無間に幽閉されていた藍染惣右介も、この戦いに限って一時的に牢を出され、完全催眠でユーハバッハの知覚を欺く。三者の力が重なってユーハバッハの未来を見通す力は崩れ、一護は最後の一撃でユーハバッハを斬り伏せる。 総隊長だった山本元柳斎重國はこの戦いのさなかにユーハバッハに討たれており、戦いのあとは京楽春水が新たな総隊長を務める。藍染は約束通り無間の牢へ戻され、以後も幽閉が続く。 戦いから十年後を描く最終話では、一護は井上織姫と結婚し、息子・一勇を授かっている。阿散井恋次と朽木ルキアも夫婦となり、娘の一花をもうけていた。ルキアは十三番隊の隊長にまで昇進している。ある日、消えたはずのユーハバッハの魂の残滓が幼い一勇の前に現れるが、一勇はそれを消してしまう。一勇自身は自分が何をしたかにも気づかないまま、次の世代へ物語が渡ったことだけを示して幕を閉じる。

The ending

Ichigo confronts Yhwach, who has absorbed the Soul King, at the heart of the Wandenreich. Yhwach's power lets him see the future and rewrite whatever part of it he dislikes, and he shatters Ichigo's blade, Zangetsu, cornering the group again and again. Backed into a corner, Ichigo turns to a former enemy, Shukuro Tsukishima, and has him write a false history into the broken blade so that it was never broken at all; Orihime Inoue's rejection then restores it. Uryu Ishida, who had taken his place at Yhwach's side as his named successor, turns on him at the decisive moment and joins Ichigo's attack. Sosuke Aizen, locked away in the deepest prison cell, Muken, is let out for this one battle and uses his complete hypnosis to blind Yhwach's perception. Between the three of them, Yhwach's grip on the future finally breaks, and Ichigo cuts him down with one last blow. Head Captain Genryusai Yamamoto had already been killed by Yhwach mid-battle; Shunsui Kyoraku serves as Head Captain afterward, and Aizen, as promised, is returned to his cell in Muken and stays imprisoned. The final chapter jumps ten years ahead. Ichigo has married Orihime Inoue, and they have a son, Kazui. Renji Abarai and Rukia Kuchiki have also married and have a daughter, Ichika; Rukia has risen to captain of Squad 13. One day, a lingering fragment of Yhwach's soul, which should have died with him, appears in front of the young Kazui, and the boy makes it vanish -- not even realizing what he has just done. The story ends there, with nothing settled about the next generation except that the story has passed to it.

解説

斬魄刀という発明

死神が持つ刀・斬魄刀には、それぞれ固有の名前と人格、そして解放時に発現する能力が設定されている。武器に名前と人格を与えるというこの発明は、単なる剣戟ではなく、使い手と刀の対話そのものを見せ場にする仕組みとして機能した。隊長格の卍解は一つひとつが個性的な能力として描かれ、キャラクターの内面や過去と結び付けられることが多い。千年血戦篇では、一護がそれまで斬月と呼んでいた老人の姿の人格が、実は彼の滅却師としての力であり、抑え込もうとしてきた白い虚の姿の方こそが本来の斬魄刀だったと明かされる。刀との対話という主題は、ここで自分の中の何と話していたのかという問いへ裏返る形になった。この設計は後続のバトル漫画における、武器に個性を持たせる型に広く影響したと評されている。

一護の出自という伏線回収

アニメと原作の間にできた空白

テレビアニメは2004年に始まり、原作を追いながら2012年3月まで放送され、死神代行消失篇までを映像化して一区切りとなった。原作は2016年に完結したが、続く千年血戦篇がアニメ化されたのは、原作完結から6年後の2022年からである。原作をすでに読んで結末を知っている層と、アニメで初めて結末に触れる層が長期間にわたって併存する状況が生まれ、この点は結末の受け取られ方にも影響したとされる。なお2004年から2012年までの放送分には原作に存在しない独自の挿話が挿入された時期があり、単行本の巻数と放送話数は対応しない。2022年に始まった千年血戦篇のアニメが扱うのは、原作の最終章にあたる範囲である。本稿の記述はいずれも原作単行本を基準としており、アニメ独自の展開は扱っていない。

完結の是非をめぐる評価

連載は打ち切りではなく作者の意向による完結だったとされるが、掲載時から賛否は分かれた。死神代行消失篇での急な力の喪失と長い雌伏期間、千年血戦篇での隊長格の相次ぐ敗北や、藍染が最終決戦で一時的に釈放される展開などは、それまでの積み重ねと矛盾するとして批判的に語られることがある一方、一護の出自を回収し、死神・虚・滅却師という三竦みの構造に決着をつけた構成として肯定的に評価する読者も多い。完結から数年を経てもコミックスの重版が続いており、評価の割れと商業的な安定は両立している。

Notes

The invention of the Zanpakuto

Every Soul Reaper's blade, or Zanpakuto, has its own name, its own personality, and a unique power that manifests on release. Giving a weapon a name and a personality turns swordplay into something else: a running conversation between a fighter and their own blade becomes the real spectacle. The captains' Bankai are each written as distinct powers, usually tied to something about that character's inner life or history. In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc it is revealed that the old man Ichigo had been calling Zangetsu was in fact his Quincy power, while the white Hollow figure he had spent the series trying to suppress was his real Zanpakuto spirit all along -- which turns a theme the story had built for years into a question about who he had been talking to. This template, giving a weapon its own character, is widely credited with influencing battle manga that came after it.

Ichigo's bloodline as long-game foreshadowing

The reveal of Ichigo's parentage in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc pays off setup that goes back to the very start of the series. His father, Isshin Kurosaki, turns out to be a former captain of Squad 10, and his mother, Masaki Kurosaki, a Quincy survivor. Masaki had been infected before Ichigo was born by White, a Hollow of Aizen's making, and that is where the Hollow inside Ichigo comes from. That the story had, from the beginning, been quietly building Ichigo into someone who carries all three of its major forces -- Soul Reaper, Quincy, and Hollow -- inside one body is often cited as a payoff for a very long-running setup. Masaki herself had been killed by a Hollow when Ichigo was small, and this arc retells the circumstances of that death. At the same time, since the bloodline reveal only becomes central fairly late in the run, some readers read it as something invented after the fact rather than planned from the start.

The gap the anime left open

The TV anime began in 2004, tracked the manga closely, and ran until March 2012, finishing with the Lost Agent arc. The manga itself ended in 2016, but the Thousand-Year Blood War arc was not animated until 2022 -- six years after the source material had already finished. That left a long stretch where people who had already read the ending and people who would meet it for the first time on screen existed side by side, and that gap is often cited as shaping how the ending itself got discussed. The 2004-2012 run also carried long stretches of episodes with no counterpart in the manga, so volume numbers and episode numbers do not line up; the 2022 series covers the manga's final arc. Everything described in this piece is based on the manga, not on anime-only material.

How the ending gets weighed

The series is generally understood to have ended on the author's own terms rather than being cut short, but reception split from the moment it ran. Ichigo's abrupt loss of power and the long powerless stretch in the Lost Agent arc, the run of captain-level defeats in the Thousand-Year Blood War, and Aizen's temporary release for the final battle all draw criticism as inconsistent with what came before; at the same time, many readers credit the ending for paying off Ichigo's origin and for actually resolving the three-way standoff between Soul Reapers, Quincies, and Hollows. The volumes have stayed in print for years after the story ended, so a split critical reception and steady commercial performance have coexisted.

  • Most sources cite 686 chapters for the main run, but counting conventions differ once the twelve unnumbered flashback chapters are included, and no single official total could be confirmed on Shueisha's own site.
  • The most recent officially confirmed print run figure is 130 million copies as of December 2022; no update covering the period up to September 2026 could be confirmed.
  • The volume ranges given for each arc (e.g., the Substitute Soul Reaper arc as vols. 1-8, the Soul Society arc as vols. 9-21) come from fan-compiled arc guides; no official Shueisha volume-to-arc chart could be confirmed.
  • The specific mechanism said to have disabled Yhwach's power (described in some fan analyses as a named silver arrow) is sourced to secondary commentary rather than confirmed against the manga's own text, so the main text says only that the three of them broke it between them.
  • Claims that Yhwach's corpse was later sealed away as a pillar holding up the worlds appear on commentary sites but could not be confirmed against the manga's final chapter, so they are left out of the main text.
  • Claims that an ornament suppressing Kazui's spiritual pressure is removed in the final chapter could not be confirmed, so they are left out of the main text.
