Synopsis

One day a mysterious creature blows apart seventy percent of the moon and shows up at Kunugigaoka Junior High School outside Tokyo, announcing that it will destroy Earth by next March. The government treats the whole affair as a state secret and quietly hands the job -- along with a ten-billion-yen reward on success -- to Class 3-E, the school's dumping ground for low scorers and problem students. Then the creature -- capable of moving at Mach 20 and immune to ordinary weapons -- announces it will spend its final year as Class 3-E's homeroom teacher, on the condition that it never harms a single student. Nicknamed Koro Sensei, it turns out to be uncannily good at reading each student's grades, worries, and future plans, and starts running a wildly unconventional classroom that teaches both schoolwork and assassination technique side by side. Nagisa Shiota, Karma Akabane, and their classmates spend their days rigging tear-gas guns, specialized rifles, and knives against him, even as Koro Sensei becomes, in their eyes, more attentive to them than any teacher they've had. Professional killers sent by the government and other interested parties keep closing in on the class, and the students are left caught between the assassination they've been assigned and the affection they've come to feel for their target.

    After destroying seventy percent of the moon and announcing it will destroy Earth by next March, the creature takes over as homeroom teacher of Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High. The government hands the class an official assassination assignment, with a ten-billion-yen reward on success. Against a target that moves at Mach 20 and shrugs off ordinary weapons, Nagisa Shiota, Karma Akabane, and the rest of the class attempt one clumsy assassination after another and fail every time. Yet true to its promise never to harm them, the creature -- now nicknamed Koro Sensei -- turns out to genuinely care about their grades and futures. Class 3-E, bewildered but not unmoved, starts to accept him as their teacher even while plotting his death, and the story lays out this contradiction as its foundation.

    Through a summer training camp, the school athletic festival, and end-of-term exams, the students keep sharpening their approach to Koro Sensei's one weakness or another. The government sends in professional assassins and other people connected to the experiment that created Koro Sensei, and through these encounters the students learn far more than weapons handling -- they start figuring out how they want to live. Alongside this, friction with the school's top-ranked class and the administration's contempt for Class 3-E keeps surfacing, reinforcing that the extraordinary business of assassination is inseparable from the students' ordinary growth. Koro Sensei himself, drawn deeper into their lives with every encounter, can no longer just be a target.

He was once a legendary assassin known as the Reaper, and after being betrayed by his own apprentice he was handed over to a researcher named Yanagisawa, whose experiments rebuilt his body into its current form. His relationship with Aguri Yukimura, a teacher assigned to watch over him during that time, is revealed as the direct reason he chose to spend his final year teaching rather than simply hiding or fighting. This flashback finally gives concrete shape to why Koro Sensei never refuses his own assassination and instead chose to keep standing in front of Class 3-E as their teacher.

    As the government and other outside forces move to eliminate Koro Sensei themselves, the students of Class 3-E choose to settle things with their own hands rather than let anyone else do it. After a final battle in which neither side holds back, the story converges on saying goodbye to Koro Sensei and on the students stepping forward into a graduation shaped by everything they've been through. Who delivers the final blow, and how the students choose to close out the assassination they were handed a year earlier, becomes the single point where every thread of the story comes together.

The ending

Spent from settling things with Yanagisawa in the final battle, and from the assault by the government's own strike team, Koro Sensei lets Class 3-E finish what they started. Nagisa Shiota, standing in for the classmates who spent the year with him, drives a knife into Koro Sensei's chest, and Koro Sensei dissolves into light and vanishes into the night sky. The students take that goodbye as their last lesson and carry it, in tears, into their graduation ceremony. The March deadline, the story has by then made clear, was never Koro Sensei's own plan to destroy the planet: the body the experiments rebuilt was set to break down and explode around that date. By the final arc, though, the odds of that explosion have been shown to have fallen to one percent or less, so killing him is no longer what saves the planet -- the students go through with it anyway, rather than leave it to the government or anyone else. The assassination, completed by the students' own hands, ends up carried out not out of hatred but out of gratitude and affection for the teacher who taught them. The final chapter jumps forward seven years. Nagisa Shiota has become a teacher; Karma Akabane passed the national civil service exam and now works for a government ministry; Kaede Kayano has gone back to acting -- and the rest of Class 3-E has scattered into just as many different careers. The story closes on what that strange, deadly year became for them: the foundation the rest of their lives were built on. Not even Nagisa, who delivered the final blow, is shown holding a grudge or treating Koro Sensei's death as a simple victory -- the ending is framed, for every one of them, as students seeing off a teacher.

The paradox of an assassination target who is also the best teacher you've had

A target who has sworn never to harm the students hunting him, yet who pays closer attention to each of them than any other teacher at the school, puts assassination and education on the same stage as a matter of course. The harder the students work to find Koro Sensei's weaknesses, the more his character and skill as a teacher come into view at the same time, so getting closer to a successful assassination and growing closer to him emotionally happen together rather than in conflict. The series almost never shows students drawing a blade out of simple hatred, all the way to the final battle, which reads as a deliberate refusal to let this paradox collapse.

What the leftover class is used for

Class 3-E is introduced as a dumping ground for low scorers and problem students, effectively written off by the rest of the school. Handing this class a mission on which the fate of the entire planet rides reads as a story about finding value in students that the school's own grading system can't measure. Even the physical detail of Class 3-E's building, set apart on a mountain away from the main campus, works as a visual cue that these students exist outside the school's usual hierarchy -- one the story keeps returning to by contrasting them with the school's top-ranked class. Kunugigaoka itself is set up as a results-obsessed prep school, which is what makes the contrast work at all.

A backstory built to justify the motive

The reveal, late in the series, that Koro Sensei was once a legendary assassin called the Reaper -- transformed by experimentation and then set on his current path through his relationship with a teacher named Aguri Yukimura -- is placed specifically to justify why he keeps meeting his own would-be killers as an educator rather than an enemy. How the students feel about him noticeably shifts once this backstory is out, and it functions less as an explanation of his power and more as the reason he chose to become a teacher at all. The contrast with Yanagisawa, the researcher behind the same experiments, also draws out how differently the two men responded to the same starting point. Aguri Yukimura also turns out to be the older sister of Kaede Kayano, one of the Class 3-E students, tying the past classroom to the present one.

How the ending has been read

Having the students carry out the assassination themselves, with their own hands, is generally read less as the payoff of a mission and reward, and more as a story about saying goodbye to a teacher. Nagisa being the one to land the final blow is usually tied back to the fact that he is the student who learned the most directly from Koro Sensei, both as an assassin and as a person figuring out how to live. Keeping assassination and education in balance all the way to the last page, rather than letting one win out over the other, is often cited as this series' clearest achievement as a school-set battle manga. The fact that the story keeps its focus on how the students process their year with Koro Sensei, more than on whether the assassination technically succeeded, shapes much of how the ending has been received.
