Synopsis

Kenshin Himura was once feared as Hitokiri Battosai, an assassin of the Bakumatsu era. Ten years after the Meiji Restoration, he wanders Japan as a drifter carrying a sakabato, a sword with its cutting edge on the wrong side, having sworn never to kill again. When he meets Kaoru Kamiya, heir to a small Tokyo dojo, she invites him to stay, and Kenshin settles in alongside a growing circle of housemates: former street brawler Sanosuke Sagara, doctor Megumi Takani, and Yahiko Myojin, a boy training in swordsmanship. But his past as a killer refuses to leave him alone. Men trading on the Battosai name, enemies still carrying grudges from the Bakumatsu, and people who want to wake the killer sleeping inside him keep surfacing, and each time Kenshin has to draw his sword to protect the people around him without ever breaking his vow. Between his history with former Shinsengumi captain Hajime Saito and a brutal fight in Kyoto against Makoto Shishio -- the man who inherited the role of assassin after Battosai left it -- and Shishio's elite guard, the Juppongatana, Kenshin is eventually forced to confront the man he was as Battosai himself.

    19〜21巻／人誅編内の回想（幕末編）

    志々雄編を終えた剣心のもとに、幕末に自らの手で斬った妻・雪代巴の弟、雪代縁が復讐のために現れる。物語はここで幕末に遡り、抜刀斎だった剣心が、暗殺者としての任務のなかで謎の女性・巴と出会い、身を隠すための偽装の夫婦生活を送るうちに惹かれ合っていく過程が描かれる。しかし巴は、剣心にかつての婚約者・清里明良を斬られた恨みを抱えて剣心に近づいた女性でもあった。その葛藤の果てに、敵の刃から剣心をかばおうと身を投げ出した巴を、剣心が自らの太刀筋のなかで斬ってしまうという事実が明かされる。この回想によって、剣心が背負ってきた贖罪の正体が初めて具体的な形で示され、縁の復讐が単なる逆恨みではなく、剣心自身の過去の清算でもあることが浮かび上がる。

  1. Setup

    A drifter moves into a dojo

    Vols. 1-6 / the Tokyo arc

    Meiji year 11, Tokyo. Kenshin Himura, once known during the Bakumatsu as Hitokiri Battosai, wanders the country carrying a reverse-blade sword under a vow never to kill again. Drifting into the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu dojo run by Kaoru Kamiya, he ends up living there, meeting former brawler Sanosuke Sagara, doctor Megumi Takani, and Yahiko Myojin, a boy learning swordsmanship. The people who come at him here are an impostor killing under the Battosai name, Kanryu Takeda, a businessman running opium, and Jin-e Udo, a former assassin who takes Kaoru hostage specifically to force the Battosai back out of Kenshin. In the fight with Jin-e, Kenshin very nearly becomes that man again, and learns that the killer in him is not dead. Beneath a growing cast of personal relationships, the shape of who Kenshin used to be starts coming into focus.

    Old ghosts meet him in Kyoto

    Vols. 7-18 / the Kyoto arc

    Word arrives that Makoto Shishio -- the man who took over as the government's assassin after Battosai walked away, and who survived being burned and left for dead by that same government -- is leading a plot to overthrow the Meiji state. Hajime Saito, former captain of the Shinsengumi's third unit and now a police officer acting on the government's behalf, turns up to test Kenshin's strength and his resolve. Leaving Kaoru and the others in Tokyo, Kenshin heads to Kyoto alone, where Shishio's elite guard, the Juppongatana, stands in his way; the duel with Soujiro Seta, who kills without ever losing his smile, tests Kenshin's vow directly. Aoshi Shinomori of the Oniwabanshu also attaches himself to Shishio's side for a time, purely to get his own chance at Kenshin. This is the arc where Kenshin has no choice but to fight at full Battosai strength, and where his vow pulls hardest against the killer still inside him. The final duel with Shishio settles things with swords, but it also puts Kenshin's whole chosen way of life on trial.

  3. Turn

    Tomoe's memory, Kenshin's origin

    Vols. 19-21 / the Bakumatsu flashback within the Jinchu arc

    With the Shishio arc behind him, Kenshin is confronted by Enishi Yukishiro, brother of Tomoe, the wife Kenshin killed with his own hands during the Bakumatsu -- and Enishi wants revenge. The story flashes back to that period, showing Battosai's path crossing with a mysterious woman, Tomoe, during his time as an assassin, and the two falling for each other while faking a married life as cover. But Tomoe had come to him carrying a grudge of her own: Battosai had cut down her fiance, Akira Kiyosato. In the story's central reveal, Tomoe throws herself between Kenshin and an enemy's blade, and Kenshin's own stroke kills her. This flashback lays out, for the first time in concrete terms, exactly what Kenshin has been atoning for, and shows that Enishi's revenge is not baseless -- it is a reckoning with something Kenshin actually did.

    Judgment, and what becomes of the vow

    Vols. 19-28 / the Jinchu arc through the final chapter

    Tomoe's brother Enishi, convinced Kenshin is entirely to blame for her death, gathers a group known as his six comrades and carries his revenge to Tokyo. The dojo is attacked, and Kenshin is broken by the sight of Kaoru's corpse -- which is in fact a life-size replica built by the doll maker Gein. Hollowed out, Kenshin drifts to Rakuninmura, a village of the destitute, and while he lies there unable to move, his friends see through the fake and work out that Kaoru is alive. Pulled back together, Kenshin goes to the island where Enishi is holding her, torn between his vow and the urge to answer Enishi the way Battosai would. From here the story narrows to a single question: how does Kenshin make peace with his past, and does he choose to keep his vow or not.

雪代縁は、姉・巴の死の真相を知らないまま剣心を憎み、人形師・外印に作らせた薫そっくりの死体を神谷道場に置いて、薫を殺したと剣心に思い込ませる。絶望した剣心は無宿人の村・落人村に流れ着くが、仲間たちが人形の偽装を見破り、薫が生きて縁のもとに囚われていることを掴んで剣心を連れ戻す。剣心は縁の島へ渡り、抜刀斎の人格に呑まれかけながらも、生きていた薫の姿と声に引き戻され、人斬りに戻らないまま剣心として縁と戦い抜く。剣心は縁を打ち倒すが、とどめは刺さない。姉の記憶に向き合わされた縁は戦う意志を失い、剣心はその命を奪わないまま島を去る。剣心が落人村で立ち直るまでのあいだ、薫は縁の島で生かされたまま囚われていた。縁が集めた六人の同志は、東京と島の双方で剣心の仲間たちがそれぞれ相手取っている。 決着のあと、剣心は薫たちのいる神谷道場へ戻る。長く連載を貫いてきた不殺の誓いは、最後まで破られることなく守られ、仲間たちもそれぞれの生き方を固めていく。 物語の締めくくりとなる最終話は、それから数年後を描く。剣心は薫と結ばれ、二人の間には息子・緋村剣路が生まれている。剣心は、長らく頬に刻まれていた十字傷が薄れ消えていく様子とともに描かれ、これは人斬りとしての過去への贖罪が一つの区切りを迎えたことを示す描写として読まれている。剣心は自らの魂ともいえる逆刃刀を、道場で剣を学んできた明神弥彦に譲り渡す。かつて人を守るためではなく人を斬るための剣として生きた男が、最後は次の世代に不殺の刀を託すところで、物語は幕を閉じる。

The ending

Enishi Yukishiro, hating Kenshin over his sister Tomoe's death without ever knowing the real story behind it, has the doll maker Gein build a replica of Kaoru's corpse and leaves it at the Kamiya dojo, so that Kenshin believes he has murdered her. Kenshin collapses into despair and drifts to Rakuninmura, a village of the destitute, until his friends see through the fake, work out that Kaoru is alive and held by Enishi, and bring him back. Kenshin crosses to Enishi's island and, though he comes close to being swallowed by the Battosai persona he has kept buried for years, the sight and sound of Kaoru alive pulls him back, and he fights Enishi through to the end as Kenshin. He beats Enishi but refuses to finish him off. Forced to face his own memory of his sister, Enishi loses the will to fight, and Kenshin leaves the island without taking his life. Through the stretch when Kenshin is pulling himself back together at Rakuninmura, Kaoru is kept alive as Enishi's prisoner on the island, and the six comrades Enishi gathered are taken on one at a time by Kenshin's friends, in Tokyo and on the island both. After the fighting ends, Kenshin returns to Kaoru and the dojo. The vow never to kill, carried the entire length of the series, is never broken, and the rest of the cast settles into paths of their own. The final chapter jumps forward several years. Kenshin has married Kaoru, and the two now have a son, Kenji Himura. Kenshin is shown with the cross-shaped scar on his cheek finally fading away, a detail widely read as marking the end of his penance for his years as a killer. Kenshin passes his reverse-blade sword, effectively an extension of himself, on to Yahiko Myojin, who has grown up training at the dojo. A man who once lived by a sword built to kill closes the story by handing a sword built not to kill down to the next generation.

解説

不殺という制約の発明

明治という時代設定の開拓

幕末を舞台にした剣豪ものは既に一つのジャンルとして存在していたが、本作は舞台をその十年後、廃刀令が敷かれ武士の時代が終わった明治十年代に置いたことで、剣客が剣客として生きにくくなった時代のなかで戦う主人公という構図を作り出した。斎藤一や四乃森蒼紫のように、旧時代の生き方を捨てられない者たちとの対比を通じて、時代の変わり目そのものがテーマの一部として機能している。作中の年代は明治十一年に始まり、廃刀令が出された明治九年より後にあたるため、主人公が刀を差して旅を続けること自体が、この時代設定では説明を要する行為として扱われている。この設定は、後続の時代劇バトル漫画における舞台選びに影響を与えたとされる。

本編のあとに続く北海道編

和月伸宏は本編の連載終了から18年後にあたる2017年、本編の後日談にあたる続編『るろうに剣心 -明治剣客浪漫譚・北海道編-』を『ジャンプSQ.』で開始し、ストーリー協力に黒碕薫を迎えて連載している。本編の週刊少年ジャンプから月刊のジャンプSQ.へと掲載誌が変わっており、ストーリー協力者が立てられている点も本編とは異なる。本稿の対象である1994年から1999年の本編とは独立した続きものという位置づけであり、本編の結末（剣心が不殺の誓いを守り抜いて物語を終える）は北海道編の存在によって上書きされるものではない。剣心のその後をさらに追いたい読者にとっては、本編の先に用意された正式な続編として参照されることが多い。

Notes

The invention of a no-killing vow

Making the strongest assassin in the story swear off killing and turning him into the hero is a device that lets strength and atonement live in the same sword. The reverse-blade sword, its edge flipped to the wrong side, is the physical symbol of that constraint -- the harder Kenshin fights, the more the sword's oddity, and the sheer difficulty of winning without killing, stands out. Makoto Shishio, an enemy who came out of the same trade as Kenshin but never gave up killing, exists to put Kenshin's chosen way of life in relief, and the question of why he refuses to kill runs under the entire series. The scenes where Kenshin nearly reverts to Battosai, placed at each major turn, keep proving that the constraint is not decoration.

The past keeps coming back as the strongest enemy

Both the Kyoto arc and the Jinchu arc put Kenshin up against enemies created directly by what he did during the Bakumatsu as Battosai. Shishio is the public-facing version -- the man handed the assassin's role Kenshin abandoned -- while Enishi is the private one, brother to a woman Kenshin killed. Stacking those two means Kenshin's past is not just backstory; it is the actual engine driving the plot forward. The Tomoe reveal in particular, told through the Jinchu arc's flashback, is the first time readers see exactly what Kenshin has been atoning for, and it is often cited as the point where this kind of arc reaches its most complete form in the series. The Kyoto arc also begins as public business, taken on at the government's request, while the Jinchu arc begins as a private fight nobody asked him to have -- and in both, his friends and the Kamiya dojo itself are chosen as targets.

Staking out the Meiji era as a setting

Swordsman stories set during the Bakumatsu already existed as a genre, but this one moves the clock forward ten years, into the late 1870s, after the sword ban had already ended the age of the samurai -- creating a hero who has to keep fighting as a swordsman in an era that no longer has room for one. Characters like Hajime Saito and Aoshi Shinomori, unable to let go of an older way of life, put that transition itself into the story as a theme. The story opens in Meiji year 11, after the 1876 sword ban, so the simple fact that the hero walks around carrying a sword is something the setting itself has to account for. This choice of setting is often credited with influencing where later historical battle manga chose to set their own stories.

The Hokkaido arc that follows the main story

In 2017, eighteen years after the original run ended, Nobuhiro Watsuki began a sequel set after the main story, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc, serialized in Jump Square with story cooperation credited to Kaoru Kurosaki. It moved from the weekly Weekly Shonen Jump to the monthly Jump Square, and unlike the main series it carries a credited story collaborator. It stands as a separate continuation from the 1994-1999 main series covered here, and the main story's ending -- Kenshin keeping his vow through to the end -- is not overwritten by its existence. Readers who want to keep following Kenshin often treat it as the official continuation waiting beyond the main story.
